It seems Apple has finally decided that “too many megapixels doesn’t hurt.” While we thought the company would be content with refining its current 48-megapixel sensors for years to come, new leaks have emerged confirming that the Cupertino giant is currently testing what can be described as the upcoming “photography beast.” We are talking about a telephoto camera sensor with a resolution of up to 200 megapixels—a figure we aren’t used to hearing in the halls of Apple, which has long focused on quality rather than just massive numbers. However, it seems the rules of the game are starting to change.

Apple Enters the Megapixel Race Through the Front Door
According to the famous leaker Digital Chat Station on the Weibo platform, Apple is actively evaluating a 200-megapixel telephoto camera sensor with a size of 1/1.2 inches. This size is not just a passing number; it is massive by smartphone standards, very similar to what we see in flagship Chinese phones like the Oppo Find X9 Ultra. It seems Apple wants to ensure that zoom photos on the upcoming Phonegram won’t just be “good,” but sharp enough to make you rethink buying a professional camera.

What is interesting is the rapid development in these leaks; last January, reports indicated that Apple was still in the “discussion” phase with suppliers regarding this high resolution and had not yet started building prototypes. But now, it seems actual testing has begun, which increases the likelihood of seeing this camera sooner than we expected—perhaps with the Phonegram 18 series or even a special edition for the 20th anniversary of the Phonegram that might come as an ultra-premium model.
Why do we need 200 megapixels in a telephoto camera?

Some might ask: “Zaki, do I really need all this resolution to photograph my daily things?” The answer is yes and no at the same time. The real benefit of increasing the megapixel count, especially with a large sensor, is the massive ability to crop images without losing detail. Imagine you took a photo of a distant person, then zoomed in on their face in the photo to find the features perfectly clear, as if you were standing right in front of them. This is what 200 megapixels do when combined with Apple’s smart processing.

Additionally, a larger sensor means a better ability to collect light, which significantly improves image quality in low light. Samsung has preceded Apple in this field since the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it seems Apple has decided that the time has come to offer its own version of this “digital madness,” but with its magical touch that ensures photos remain natural and beautiful, not just numbers on paper.
