Transferring files between an iPhone and Android devices has long felt like trying to speak a language the other party doesn’t understand, with each side living on its own isolated island, surrounded by the walls of its software ecosystems. But it seems these walls are finally beginning to crack; Google announced today significant updates to its “Quick Share” feature aimed at bridging the deep divide between the two systems, making sending photos and videos to your friend with an Android phone no longer require a technical miracle or resorting to complex third-party apps.

Quick Share expands to support more devices
The Quick Share feature, which is Google’s official answer to Apple’s famous AirDrop, was already in existence and supported limited compatibility with Apple devices on select Android phones. However, the big news here is Google’s intention to massively expand this scope to include a long list of manufacturers. By 2026, we will see this compatibility reach devices from Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, and even HONOR.

This means that device harmony will not be limited to those who own the latest Pixel phones, but will extend to the vast majority of Android users around the world. The goal is clear: to make the transfer process as instantaneous and simple as if you were moving a file between two iPhones, something we as Apple fans have wished for years to facilitate interactions with our friends in the other camp.
Cloud solutions and QR codes to overcome obstacles
What if the Android phone is old or does not support direct compatibility with AirDrop? Google hasn’t left those users behind. The company has introduced a smart solution based on QR codes; an Android device can generate a QR code when you want to share specific content. Once an iPhone user scans this code with their device’s camera, they are taken to a secure cloud link to download the file immediately.

This feature will begin reaching all Android devices starting today, and the global rollout is expected to be completed within the next month. Google didn’t stop there; it also revealed plans to integrate Quick Share into popular messaging apps like WhatsApp in the near future, completely eliminating the need to leave the app to send large files in their full quality.
Migrating from iPhone to Android (and vice versa) has become easier
Beyond transient file sharing, Google has also focused on “facilitating the transition” between the two worlds. Thanks to pressure from the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in Europe, Apple and Google have collaborated to improve device switching tools. While Apple launched its features in the iOS 26.3 update, Google confirmed that its updated tools will reach Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices in 2026.

The new transition process will be more comprehensive than before; it doesn’t just transfer contacts and photos, but now includes eSIMs, passwords, messages, and even the layout of your apps on the Home Screen. It is an attempt to make the idea of trying a new system less daunting than it used to be, although we all know that the magic of the iOS system cannot be replaced so easily!
In addition to all of the above, it seems that 2026 will be the year of technical collaboration par excellence, as reports indicated that Google is working with Apple to integrate Gemini AI capabilities into a more customized version of Siri. It seems the insulating walls built by Steve Jobs and Bill Gates long ago are beginning to fade before a reality that mandates mutual cooperation for the benefit of the user (or perhaps out of fear of strict laws).
