Yesterday, Apple officially announced the cancellation of the AirPower wireless charging platform, which it first announced in 2017, and attributed this to reasons, chief among them the inability of the charging platform to meet the highest standards for its devices, according to a TechCrunch report.

Apple is officially canceling the AirPower wireless charging pad

Apple announced the AirPower charging pad that is supposed to be specially designed to charge Apple Watch, iPhone and AirPods simultaneously. This device was announced in September 2017, in sync with the launch of the iPhone X. Then Apple announced that the device would be launched in 2018, and 2018 came and passed and we did not see any sign of the product’s release, but Apple did not speak about it in a single word.

Since Apple announced it in 2017, there have been persistent rumors of difficulties facing Apple, so the product has not been launched since that time. Apple said that the main reason for canceling work entirely on this product is because the company has not been able to achieve what it was aiming for.

She said after a lot of effort, we concluded that the AirPower charging platform would not meet our high standards and so we canceled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to launching this device. “We still believe the future is wireless and we are committed to pushing the wireless experience forward,” Dan Richio, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, said in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

Reasons for canceling the launch of AirPower

Notably, rumors were continuing about the production and manufacturing engineering difficulties of the AirPower cargo platform. More than one report indicated that there were problems with the device's temperature, communication problems between the charging platform and the devices, as well as the problem of interference between them. It seems that these problems have not been solved yet and will take quite some time. And Apple wants to design a charger that enables you to put your devices on it safely and without any problem.

It was said that one of the reasons for the delay in the production of this device is difficult engineering problems related to the laws of physics. On top of the engineering problems to manufacture this device is that it requires multiple Coils to charge close to each other and requires very careful power management, and this results in a high temperature of the device reaching the point of damaging the components of the device. This is an engineering problem that Apple cannot solve at the moment.

The AirPods headphone box that was launched last week was supposed to work with wireless charging on the AirPower platform. You can also charge the Apple Watch 3 and 4, the iPhone 8 and the X family, but nothing of that will happen, at least in the near future. And Apple itself was treating as if the charger was coming soon, even after the release of the XS Max.

When the AirPods charging case was released recently, speculation increased that the AirPower launch was imminent, so the decision to cancel AirPower is a shock to users of Apple devices that support wireless charging, especially after the persistent rumors that work on the product is in full swing.

The basic concepts of standard wireless charging are well known and companies do not face any problem in their production, but what Apple wants is a difficult challenge to the laws of engineering these devices, Apple wants to put several devices on one charging platform, allowing them to charge all at one time, taking into account the levels and rates of charging. I have those devices, and this is an equation that is difficult to achieve at the moment.

It is also worth noting that AirPower is still mentioned in the newly launched AirPods charging case, and Apple recently acquired a trademark for the AirPower name. It seems that Apple has worked hard for several months to find solutions to manufacturing problems, but it seems so complicated that Apple decides to cancel the project in the end.
