Apple's industrial design team is undergoing a series of changes, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. The report states that several veterans of the industrial design team under the leadership of Johnny Eve are leaving Apple. So why are they leaving? Will this affect various Apple products? Three members of Apple's industrial design team have left. Others plan to leave the company, after decades of experience and introduce the most popular products in the world.
Rico Zorkendorfer and Daniele De Ulysse have been working for Apple in the field of industrial design for various devices for 35 years, and they were the icon of the 24-person design team led by Johnny IveThey recently decided to leave the company. The matter did not stop with them, but extended to include Julian Honig, who has worked in the same team for more than a decade, as it was said that he intends to leave Apple in the coming months. Mr. Zorkendorfer said that he intends to leave in order to relieve the hassle of his professional life, and to allow him to spend time with his family, adding that he feels very proud of his work for Apple. More recently, Danny Koster left the industrial design team in 2016 and joined GoPro, a "high definition personal camera" company. Whereas Christopher Stringer left in 2017 where he has been a designer at Apple since 1995 and is credited with designing the first iPhone.
Departure began to increase when Johnny Eve took over the design department in 2015, declining his role as the day to day overseeing the design team. He was represented by Richard Howarth and Alan Day until the return of Johnny Ive in 2017, when the design team submitted their reports to him again and not to his two deputies.
The design team played a fundamental role in the success of Apple and its devices led by Johnny Eve who kept the team connected throughout his tenure with Apple. The newspaper says, that Mr. Jobs put the design team at the center of Apple's product development process, and used to follow it almost daily to see its latest work and suggestions for new designs.
According to the report, the team is slowly disintegrating after the success of many Apple products, especially the iPhone, and things have become stable.
Some have suggested that the personnel changes are a sign of a new generation of designers. "We have a new generation of amazing designers," Zorkendorfer said. "And what we've done in the past decades will continue to have talent."
The change in Apple's core design team is said to have to do with a time when iPhone sales have slowed and the company's decision to pause some new products to focus on more important new subscription services than ever. Apple announced several new services, including Apple News +, Apple Arcade, Apple Card and Apple TV +.
Some emphasized that the change in team composition made sense, as Apple is shifting from designing Macs and iPhones to other new projects, including augmented reality and self-driving cars. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple may have self-driving cars by 2025, according to a report cited by Mashable.
And Apple's designers are rumored to be working hard to offer a variety of devices. They are likely to be augmented reality devices that could be revealed in 2020.
