We mentioned in a previous article a report on Leave Johnny Ive , Apple's director of design for more than two decades. In this report, we shed light on 8 successful designs of Johnny Eve and the likes of which he failed and did not succeed, starting from the iMac G3, which revolutionized at the time, to the iPhone, through the Hi-Fi iPod, the butterfly keyboard, and the Apple Magic Mouse 2 that did not achieve any Little success. This indicates that Johnny is not perfect in spite of the great successes he has achieved, but to clarify the difference between those who want to succeed and preserve it and those who stand at a stumbling block or a failure and think it is the end.

Successful and failed designs of Johnny Ive, get to know her

IMac G3 1998

A successful product, the iMac G3 is one of the devices that cemented Jony Ive's design leadership at Apple. It was a versatile computer whose first color was dark green, and after a while the company released other colors. It was sold with a mouse and keyboard of the same color as the device. It was called "all in one", meaning the screen, motherboard, CPU, storage memory and all the internal parts of the computer in one box with the screen. It came with a 15-inch screen, and a 3 MHz PowerPC G233 processor. RAM starts from 32 MB to 1 GB that is accessed through a door at the bottom of the device. It is provided with 2 MB graphic memory. And provided with a hard disk capacity of 4 GB, and was characterized by ease of use, and the speed of the Internet connection "modem speed of 56 KB", this is not a slot for the headphone, and a slot to insert a microphone. The device was aimed at the lower market and its price was $ 1299 at the time.

1998 USB Disk Hockey Mouse

Of the failed products, it was the world's first USB mouse in the form of a hockey disk, but unfortunately it did not achieve great success, as the round shape and small size made it uncomfortable to use, but it was rolling on all sides easily, as well as its short wire. Some even criticized it for promising it among the worst technological products ever invented.

IPod 2001

A successful product, it was launched in October 2001 and its design was inspired by the Braun T3 pocket radio launched in 1958.

The iPod had 5 GB of storage space. Connectivity via USB did not support until 2004, that is, after four generations of it, at that time the iPod had dominated portable music.

 Power Mac G4 Cube 2000

Among the failed products, it was launched on January 19, 2000. And it was technologically remarkable, the price of the device started from 1799 dollars and was much higher than its competitors at that time, and the reason for this increase in the price is the interest in the design and the purity and strength of the plastic. This device was shaped like a cube 7 "by 7" in clear plastic so that it seemed to you to be floating in the water in the center of this cube. It was considered a technological revolution in terms of shape and design and had its own touch power button.

Not only that, this device was working in complete silence as it was not equipped with any fans for cooling. Apple adopted the convection method “which is that hot particles after they heat up rise to the top and cold particles come from below to replace them until they heat up, then rise and come again. Cool and so. This device came with a 4 MHz G450 processor, 64 MB RAM, and 20 GB storage space.

One of the reasons for the failure of this device is that it did not achieve large sales due to its high price. As well as the occurrence of cracks in the plastic cover surrounding it. This prompted Jobs to issue a decision to suspend him only one year after its issuance.

Headphones iPod 2001

A successful product, it was included with the iPod and became one of the first most popular technologies. With the development over time, AirPods headphones with their current design have become icons of the modern era, so you can see them everywhere, especially in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

IPod Hi-Fi 2006

Many iPod products were successful, but Hi-Fi iPods were not. It is a loudspeaker "headphones" provided by Apple on February 28, 2006 for use as a music player that works with a remote control and can be connected to the iPod. This device failed due to the high price compared to its competitors, as it came at $ 349, and it also has very limited functions. In terms of design, the place of placing the iPod on the device was considered insecure compared to other devices such as the Bose SoundDock, as the device was placed on the side and installed above 30 years.

Apple discontinued Hi-Fi production in 2007, just a year later.

IPhone 2007

After putting the iPod on the upward path, the iPhone came in June 2007 and put Apple at the top of the technological pyramid, in short, the iPhone is Apple's chicken that lays golden eggs for 12 years.

IPhone 5C in 2013

I consider this iPhone one of the mistakes that Apple made, the phone was launched alongside the iPhone 5S at a low price. But the advantages of the iPhone 5S, especially the unlocking of the phone with a fingerprint, is what made most users reluctance to buy it in favor of the 5S. Likewise, the design of the phone and its manufacture of plastic did not suggest that it was manufactured by Apple, but rather a copy in China, so the world turned away from it, even the young people preferred not to use it.

MacBook Air 2008

One of the successful products, this device is characterized by extreme thinness and lightness, and it was considered the thinnest laptop in its time, with a thickness of 1.93 cm in the thickest area, 0.4 cm in the thinnest area, and a weight of 1.36 kg. And in order to reach this small size it does not include a CD reader. It also contains an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a magnetic lock system, and an aluminum housing.

Although its thinness affected the size of its components such as a small hard disk, a small processor and a small battery, it was the reason for the invention of a new class of thin laptops such as "ultrabooks" from Intel and later Surface Pro from Microsoft, ASUS ZenBook, HP Specter x360 and Dell XPS 13 and Others.

Mac Pro 2013

Apple decided to redesign the Mac Pro for 2013. It was designed in the form of a trash bin, as described at the time by Phil Schiller, as evidence that the company is still able to innovate! However, this design did not pay off due to the problems it caused, especially its high temperature.

Apple Watch 2015

The first new product line since the death of Steve Jobs, the Apple Watch is the most popular smartwatch, especially with Apple's focus on mobile devices and health. There is no doubt that the first version of the watch was slow and lacking a lot, but Apple worked to rectify this matter until the watch became a symbol of elegance and a common sight in many countries of the developed world.

3D Touch, or hardened pressure

The idea of this technology is great, as it makes the right mouse button to open more options, and it was known in the past as Force Touch or the hard press on the Apple Watch, then it was known after that with 3D Touch or 2019D Touch. This technology did not achieve widespread use, perhaps due to its lack of expansion in its use and not to provide more options, until it was ignored by many. In the end, Apple began to ignore it and it is expected that it will be replaced by the Haptic Touch feature in the XNUMX devices.

Taptic Engine 2015

A small device that has been in the Apple Watch, iPhone and MacBook since 2015, which is a small motor that vibrates and provides feedback that the user feels when pressing certain things on your devices. Like the home button on the iPhone 7 and 8 and the touchpad on the Mac, it is also a successful design.

Butterfly keyboard

The adoption of thinness in devices has taken a turn for the worse through the butterfly keyboard, which was introduced with the MacBook in 2015. Customers reported various problems such as repeating the command twice from some keys, hanging some of them, or stopping them from working at all, as well as the entry of dust under them easily. Which require disassembling the entire machine to be repaired. The issue was brought to light after the Wall Street Journal published an article about the problem, which led to Apple apologizing and working on resolving the issues.

AirPods 2016

Her design was mocked at first, but she quickly changed the landscape in her favor and became extremely popular. And this concept of headphones has become the "fashion" that many seek to acquire.

Magic Mouse 2 for 2017

Apple seems to be struggling to make a comfortable mouse, although the first Magic Mouse was great, it wasn't comfortable either. Also, Mouse Magic 2 contained an error in its design, which is to make the charging port at the bottom, which means it is impossible to use the mouse while charging.

Despite Apple's failure to design some products, it did not stop at that point like other companies, but left it behind its back and reformed and modernized until it made leaps and bounds racing against time and raced with the speed of technological progress and keep pace with the times. Likewise, we have to look ahead and jump and not look behind us for long or below us, where the obstacles that delay us from those who preceded us by light years.

What do you think of Johnny Eve's designs? If we do not mention one of those designs that did not achieve the desired success, tell us about it in the comments.
