We know a lot about the Find My iPhone feature or find the iPhone, which has been around for years to help find the lost iPhone and was updated to Find My in iOS 13 and was used to find a stolen car as we mentioned in a previous article -Link-. But some do not know that Apple has expanded this feature to help you locate your AirPods in case they disappear, and although the feature is not as advanced as Find My iPhone, it can help you a lot in tracking your AirPods. So how do you use it to find your lost AirPods?

Although the AirPods are advanced wireless earbuds, they do not contain any wireless or Wi-Fi devices, which means that you will not be able to use the Find My AirPods feature to locate them precisely unless they are within the iOS 'Bluetooth range. IPhone where the last place is recorded with great accuracy, which may help you to know the location.

How to find lost AirPods

The fact that there is no dedicated setup that you need to do to set up the Find My AirPods feature; As long as you activate Find My iPhone on your iPhone, Find AirPods will be enabled automatically once you pair your new AirPods or AirPods Pro.

The default name for your AirPods is the one that will appear in the Find My app. And if you want to customize this name, you can do so easily through the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone device as follows:

  • Make sure your AirPods are connected to your iPhone, or open the case or place it in your ears.
  • Go to the Settings app on your iPhone and then Bluetooth
  • From the list of devices, tap the (i) icon next to your AirPods.
  • Click on the "Name" field and type what you want.

Once you do that, AirPods will be displayed in the Find My app using that name instead.

Use Find My AirPods or Find My Headphones

To locate your AirPods, open the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then click the "Devices" button at the bottom. This will open a list of all Find My enabled devices, including AirPods or AirPods Pro.

Clicking AirPods or AirPods Pro in this list will take you to a screen where you can see their current or last known location, along with a button that lets you play a sound to help you locate that device.

If your AirPods are connected when you click on Play Sound, both of them should immediately start making a loud noise for two minutes to help you locate them, and the volume gradually becomes louder over time.

You'll also see a new set of options that let you control whether audio should play through the left, right, or both AirPod. This can be useful if you suspect that an AirPods are somewhere you don't know it.

If your AirPods are out of range when you click the "Play Audio" button, Find My will save the play audio command for playback when in range and connect them automatically. In addition to playing audio when reconnecting your AirPods, you'll also get a notification from Find My to let you know that they are near you so you can start listening to them.

Find your stolen AirPods

Unlike Find My iPhone, unfortunately this feature won't be very useful if your AirPods are lost or completely stolen, but it can definitely help you know where you last got.

Unfortunately, too, since your AirPods do not connect to your iPhone when they're in the charging case, Find My will only show you where you last used your AirPods and won't show where they were while in the box.

While Apple is intelligently expanding the Find My feature to locate even offline devices, it does not appear to have added “crowdsourcing” or crowdsourcing technology to AirPods yet. This means that you will only be able to locate your AirPods if your iPhone or iPad is nearby and the other nearby iOS devices cannot capture the AirPods in order to help you locate them.

There is a lot of evidence indicating that Apple will soon introduce AirTags, which will provide the ability to search without an Internet connection from the global iPhone network. It is believed that future AirPods will include AirTag technology to help users locate their location with great accuracy.
