As expected, Apple unveiled iOS 14 during the opening speech For WWDC, And revealed some important changes in the design and also revealed a number of new features. This time, Apple has focused less on modifying individual apps in iOS, opting instead to redesign the long-awaited user interface, which has resulted in some welcome improvements across the system. Learn about the highlights of the iOS 14 update.

All-new home screen

In the iOS 14 update, Apple made the largest home screen redesign in iOS history. As we know, Apple used to introduce modifications, but they were not radical in the sense of the word except in this update, so the modifications affected almost everything, including:

App library

Apple added a way to organize applications under the name "App Library", in which all applications are organized in one simple and easy to navigate view between them, so that the applications are sorted and grouped by category and this appears under each group of applications, such as social networking applications. Entertainment, recently added, Apple Arcade, most used apps under Suggestions, and more.

Each category of these applications will present the most used application as a larger icon that can be opened by simply clicking on it directly from outside the folder without the need to open the folder, and this will be based on the artificial intelligence of the device, which will also be used in the suggested applications category i.e. your favorites and the most used and then predict the applications That you want to run later.

A new search has also been added for applications, which shows you an alphabetical list of applications, similar to Apple Watch applications.

It also enables you to select and hide entire pages.

◉ Widget

Regardless of the existence of this in the Android system for years. Apple has added a richer widget with different sizes and you can drag and place it on any application page you want. The "Today" widget is still located to the left or right of the first home screen, and the widget can appear side by side with the Today screen, or it can be dragged directly to any home screen to be placed in the middle of application icons or anywhere you want.

Developers can also present their widgets in different sizes, which can be previewed when adding a new widget to the Today screen or directly to the Home screen, and this can be done via a new additional button that appears in the upper left or right corner if you edit the main screen. This button will display you a gallery of tools and provide a preview of all your available tools, rather than just a static list, including all available sizes and designs for each.

Apple also added the new Smart Stack tool to iOS 14, which will contain a set of widgets that can serve as a window for many widgets that you use a lot, but you will not be able to customize them at least for the time being, but Siri's intelligence can be used to automatically display the appropriate widget at different times. From today, such as viewing news and weather in the morning and calendar appointments during your workday, and entertainment options in the evening.

Picture in picture

While the iPad supports the picture-in-picture feature for a long time, here is Apple also adding it to the iPhone, allowing you to keep displaying any video in miniature form floating on the iPhone screen while navigating through the applications.

The "picture in picture" video playback feature has become more dynamic, as the video can be dragged around the screen and even resized so that you can shrink and enlarge it as you like with just your fingers. You can also swipe the video to the edge of the screen to hide it while keeping the audio playing in the background. You can also drag it from the edge of the screen to display it again, similar to the slide-over view feature on iPadOS. Not only video clips, but FaceTime calls too.

New window to notify incoming calls

I am reminded of the saying of Tunisian Ahmed El Hefnaoui, "We are aging for the sake of this moment," although it may seem like a small advantage, but it has always been called by users of Apple devices. Finally, Apple responded and admitted, according to Craig Federighi, that the old window was "not great" and changed the way incoming calls are notified to the iPhone and iPad alike, instead of the old window that came with a full screen size. The notification for incoming calls will appear at the top of the screen like any other notification, and you can answer or reject it without interrupting what you are working on.

This feature will also work with every app that uses the CallKit user interface, meaning all calling apps, whether it's cell phone calls, FaceTime calls, Skype calls, Facebook messengers or something else, will all use mini-banner notifications at the top of the screen.

Crab

Siri has also been completely redesigned so that when you summon it, it will appear in a new compact design in the form of a floating Siri bubble at the bottom of the screen, without exiting the app you're working on.

If you ask Siri to do something that requires no media response, such as opening a specific app, Siri will open it directly. Otherwise, the banner notifications that slide from the top of the screen will be used to show the information rather than displaying it in full screen.

Also, as with every new release of iOS in recent years, Apple is improving Siri's intelligence, which will allow support for more complex questions, send voice messages, and convert dictations to text directly on the device instead of sending them to the cloud and then converting, providing Faster performance, better resolution and most importantly, better privacy.

New translation app

As part of the Siri improvements, iOS 14 comes with a new translation app, which translates completely on the device without using the Internet, and currently supports 11 different languages, including Arabic, English, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Russian and others.

In addition to translating phrases, the app will be able to translate conversations, allowing users to speak to each other in different languages. And placing the iPhone in landscape mode will enable "Conversation Mode" which will provide a side-by-side view of each language using a single microphone button. When someone speaks, the iPhone will intelligently detect the language being spoken, and automatically translate it into the language set on the other side of the app.

Certainly, these are not all the new features in iOS 14, and we will bring you the second part and more updates and features that came with this wonderful update.

Which features you liked the most in the iOS 14 update, let us know in the comments.
