Apple and Google are traditional rivals for a long time, despite the strong competition between the two giants and the criticism directed by Apple in several areas, especially privacy. However, Apple continues to cooperate with Google, where it rents a very large amount of Google cloud for its iCloud service.

Apple and Google

This may surprise you but most of Apple's iCloud storage is nothing but rented space from Google's cloud service, as Apple spends a lot to buy space from Google Cloud to sell it as iCloud storage.

According to The Information, Apple is ready to increase spending on Google cloud services by 50%, and this will make Apple own more than 8 exabytes (meaning a quintillion or a billion billion or 1018) of space on the Google cloud.

This increase cements Apple's position as the largest customer of Google's cloud storage service, followed by other notable customers such as ByteDance, owner of the TikTok app and music service Spotify.

As of mid-May, Apple was on track to spend about $300 million buying space from Google's cloud storage service this year, which would be a nearly 50% increase compared to 2020, which is why Google employees called Apple Bigfoot. Because it has become their biggest and most important customer.

What is the difference between Google Drive and iCloud?

You might be thinking that you are only paying Apple a higher price when comparing the amount paid with storage at Apple and Google. Of course this is true and Apple itself knows so it decided to provide additional advantages; In addition to the fact that the Apple service supports features that Google does not provide, such as backup support for various Apple devices; So Apple decided to unveil iCloud+ which allows users to get more cloud storage including HomeKit Secure Video camera recordings. With Apple encouraging its users to move their data to its own cloud, it stands to reason that it will need more cloud storage, especially as photo and video quality improves and file size increases.

Is Apple user data protected?

Of course, you have the right to be concerned, especially since Google's history depends on accessing users' data for its ad network, but don't worry, it's like renting an apartment; So does if you rent an apartment, this means that the owner of the house will interfere with your privacy! Of course not, your apartment has a key and here it is “encryption” and Google cannot spy on the data that Apple records.

Finally, Google, along with Amazon and Microsoft, are the major names in cloud storage on the planet. Operating services of this kind has never been the goal of a company like Apple and requires a lot of time, money and management; Indeed, Apple is building a lot of its cloud computers, but the current demand exceeds what Apple owns, so it is renting from others. Incidentally, Apple also uses Amazon servers to store other data.

What do you think about Apple's adoption of Google's cloud service? Do you think that Apple should move entirely to Microsoft or Amazon instead of Google? Tell us in the comments
