A study says that Apple and Google dominate the iPhone and Android thanks to their pre-installed applications on smartphones, and this means that they do not play fair, which eliminates external applications and prevents them from competing with the applications of the two companies. What is the story of this study and what were its results?

A study funded by Facebook proves the monopoly of Apple and Google and the prevention of competition

Apple and Google

If you use an Android phone or an iPhone, the majority of your most used apps on your device are probably made by Apple and Google. This is the summary of a new study done by Comscore, the statistics and analysis company, and commissioned by the social network Facebook (An enemy of Apple), where the results of the study showed that the majority of the applications that people use on their phones in the United States come pre-installed by Apple and Google.

Facebook Study

The study says that the basic pre-installed applications on smartphones such as weather, photos, clock, etc., make it difficult for other third-party applications to compete against the applications of the two companies.

Perhaps the importance of that study is due to the appropriate timing, which is what Facebook intended, as Apple and Google are currently increasingly under scrutiny for their preference for their services over competitor apps such as Spotify, and US lawmakers are currently reviewing a new set of bills designed to limit the power of the tech giants there, including legislation. That would potentially prevent both Google and Apple from giving their services the upper hand against competitors' apps.

Although Apple and Google dominate the phones through their pre-installed applications, the criticism is more powerful on Apple, since it controls more tightly the applications that come pre-installed on the iPhone and does not allow developers to circumvent its own App Store.

Apple and Google reaction

Google declined to comment while Apple rejected the results of the study and its spokesperson said the survey was funded by Facebook It has nothing to do with reality and gives the wrong impression that there is no competition on the App Store, but the truth is otherwise, and external applications compete with Apple applications without any problem.

Finally, returning to the results of the Facebook study, we find that in the iOS system there are 5 external applications among the top 20 applications, that is, 15 applications belonging to Apple, and in the Android system there are 13 applications belonging to Google among the top 20 applications, and this already proves the dominance of Apple and Google on the Android and iOS systems - iPhone, and the study did not mention Safari and Chrome browsers, and if they were included, Apple and Google would have seemed more dominant.

The question here is, is there fierce competition on the App Store, the truth is yes, but this does not negate the fact that the pre-installed applications of Apple and Google have the advantage and rise to the top.
