Perhaps it is not as widespread in our Arab world until now because applications such as WhatsApp are on the scene here, but there are some places in the world such as the United States where some people do not know that there are other applications for chatting other than i-Message. Indeed, many users consider i-Message to be the most important reason not to change from iPhone to Android. This is due to several factors, including that the main application on the phone usually takes over.

But today, after the increase in security concerns and major corporate scandals, in this article we tell you about some of the tricks Apple is doing to make i-Message the best encrypted chatting application. And how it is not affected by the biggest flaw that hinders these applications is the difficulty of synchronization.

The biggest drawback of encrypted chat applications and how i-Message solves it

Why does WhatsApp work on one device?

WhatsApp is known to only work on one device. Even if you connect it to the computer via the WhatsApp computer program or from the browser, you must keep your phone running and the WhatsApp application in the background. And maybe those who used it know that the way this is done is very annoying and the connection is constantly being cut off.

This problem comes because WhatsApp encrypts messages exchanged with E2E (End-to-End) technology. Which means it can't display the same messages on two devices at the same time. Whereas, the message - in a simplified form - is transmitted directly from the sender's device to only one device, which is your phone.

What about Telegram?

Telegram works on multiple devices more than wonderfully and is a feature-rich application. It is also famous for its safety. But you may not know that normal messages in Telegram are not E2E encrypted at all. This comes because Telegram wants to enable the user to seamlessly sync messages between different devices.

But if you want to make a real encrypted conversation in Telegram, you have to click on the name of the contact and then make a secret chat. Here, messages are encrypted using E2E technology, but those messages remain locked to one device, so you cannot sync them between your computer, iPhone, and iPad.

Security tax on Telegram.

signal!

Soon, Signal appeared on the scene as an alternative after another rumor spread regarding the WhatsApp program. Indeed, Signal securely encrypts messages and is from a much better reputable organization than Facebook (the owner of WhatsApp). Signal also allows you to receive encrypted messages on multiple devices! See how he does it?

Signal uses a trick similar to what Apple does. The encrypted messages are resent to each device individually. When you send a message to your friend who owns 3 devices, it is not sent only once. Rather, it is sent three times, once for each device and with a different code for each device separately.

However, Signal will not enable you to sync your SMS messages and the biggest drawback is that it does not restore previous messages. Meaning that if you download Signal on your computer, it will not sync the messages you already have on the iPhone, but will only receive new messages from the time you download the application.

Finally, i-Message

Apple uses what I like to call a similar approach to Signal but with some Apple creativity and a lot of money to get the technology needed. The service resends messages with a different encryption for each device you own. Also, all messages can be stored in the cloud (if you turn on the feature) for later retrieval. But all these messages are stored in an encrypted form that can only be decrypted with a key that is only on your device and does not leave it. So even Apple can't decrypt these messages.

This system enables Apple to provide a seamless user experience. All you have to do is use the service and it will work alone. You'll find all your messages everywhere and they'll all be encrypted and you won't even have to think about it.

Several years ago, Apple added a feature that (if you turn it on in Settings) allows you to sync SMS messages from your phone. This way, you can see bank messages or site access codes on any device you own. And all this is encrypted the same way in the cloud.
