Apple released the beta version of iOS 15.4 (breaking news we always keep in the story of the iPhone Islam app). And it introduced a useful new feature that allows you to unlock the iPhone using the face print while wearing a mask (medical face mask), and the new feature does not require an Apple Watch, this is great, but there is a small problem, the Face ID unlock feature will only work when wearing the mask in Modern iPhones.

The new version of Face ID

Since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, and in order to unlock the iPhone, you had to remove the mask from your face to be able to do so, and this was very dangerous, especially in public places, and Apple added successive updates to Face ID, in line with the new reality.

In the initial updates, Apple released the iOS 13.5 update to show the password prompt faster if the iPhone detects the mask.

As the voices started to get louder and Apple was asking to improve the situation even more and make people keep their masks on their faces, Apple came up with a solution in the iOS 14.5 update, and engaged the Apple Watch to help verify and unlock the iPhone. However, it seemed a difficult solution, especially for many users who do not wear an Apple Watch. Even those who own a watch, the watch must be within the range of the iPhone.

Now, a year later, and it seems that Apple is preparing to provide a better solution in the iOS 15.4 update, Apple has added a new feature which is the use of face ID with a mask. This update is described as follows:

Face ID is more accurate when it's set up for full facial recognition only. To use Face ID while wearing a mask, the iPhone can identify unique features around the eye area for authentication.

But the feature should work on iPhone 12 and later.

How will the new feature work?

Apple is currently testing the feature with the iOS 15.4 public beta and will roll it out to all users in the coming months. In order for Face ID to work while wearing a muzzle, the company has worked on new algorithms that have been trained to identify unique characteristics and features around the eye area to unlock your device, and the company said that the security levels of this new feature It's the same as Face ID without a mask and with an error rate of 1 in 1000000 attempts.

Why the latest iPhone devices?

The reason behind this is that the feature requires improvements in the TrueDepth camera system and it seems that the Face ID system on the iPhone 11 is not powerful enough, so the process of scanning the unique features around the eye area to authenticate using the face print while wearing the muzzle consumes the resources of the device, so it became Limited to the latest iPhone and iPad models.

What if I wear glasses?

The new version of Face ID will support mask unlocking even if you wear glasses. While it is recommended that you register your entire face with glasses when you perform the initial examination, you can add glasses later. For security reasons, Apple will allow up to four pairs of glasses with each registration.
