The only thing these headphones are missing is active noise cancellation, which is only found with AirPods Pro.

But even the best wireless earbuds sometimes have problems. And if your AirPods have a problem and you're not sure why, the best way to start troubleshooting is a full factory reset. And you'll just have to reconnect it to your devices when it restarts.

Factory resetting your AirPods is simple, but the process is not straightforward, there are no menus for you to choose from, and all you have to do is know the correct buttons to press.


Why do you need to reset your AirPods to factory settings?

There is no official list of issues that can be fixed with a factory reset. But it is a kind of comprehensive solution to unexplained problems. And if you're experiencing any of the issues below, a factory reset might help you fix it.

What kind of sound problemIf you have a problem with the sound, for example, unsteady or different sound quality in either of the two earphones.

Connection problemsIf your AirPods suddenly have problems connecting to your devices or can't find new devices to connect to, Bluetooth issues can be resolved with a reset.

Trouble charging correctlyUnless your AirPods are physically damaged or have dirty charging ports, and if your AirPods are plugged in but not responding to charging, you should reset them first.

Automatic ear detection not workingAutomatic ear detection is the feature that pauses the sound if you remove either earbud, and if this feature is enabled in your settings but doesn't seem to work, resetting might fix the problem.

Your AirPods battery is draining fastIf you have an older version of AirPods, it is definitely possible that the battery has run out. If so, you may need to replace the entire battery, but if you have a newer AirPods and you think the battery is not working properly, it can be resolved with a reset.


How to factory reset your AirPods

The factory reset process is the same on all models of AirPods, so you'll be able to follow these instructions no matter which version you have.

◉ Put your AirPods in the charging case and close the cover, if your AirPods are already in the charging case, that's OK. And if you just entered it, wait at least 30 seconds before continuing.

◉ Open the charging case cover without removing the earphones.

◉ You will need to disconnect the AirPods from any devices, and if they are automatically connected to the iPhone, iPad or Mac, you can go to “Settings” on the iPhone, then Bluetooth, then press the icon For more information, then tap Forget This Device.

◉ With the charging case lid open, press and hold the button on the back of the case. Hold the button until the status light on the front of the charging case flashes amber and then white. This should take about 15 seconds. If the white light does not appear, close and open the cover and try again.

◉ Once the status light blinks white, your AirPods have been reset, you will need to reconnect them to your device, and you will need to adjust any customizations you have enabled such as connection preferences or Bluetooth settings controls.
