The Notes or Notes app allows you to jot down ideas, scan documents, make to-do lists, and more. But many users may not know that they can also use it to collaborate or share with other people, and this feature allows multiple people to read and edit a single note at the same time, which means that the people participating in the note can practically have a conversation with each other. All they have to do is type something, as you would via text, and then the other person responds.

But why use the Notes app for this, and not just the Messages app? Especially when you will soon be able to Edit and Unsend Texts in iOS 16؟

Unlike text messages, any conversation in a note can be "self-destructive" with a little intrusion, similar to Snapchat. After you write a message, the other person can delete it and send their reply, which you can then delete and replace with your own, and so forth. You can have an incredibly long conversation, without any evidence of it happening.

If you want to know how to turn the Notes app into a place for hidden conversations on iOS, here's what you need to know.

Create a note

◉ On your iPhone, launch the Notes app and tap Create at the bottom right or left to create a new note.

◉ Next, write anything in the note to keep, otherwise it will be deleted automatically when you exit the note.

◉ You can also move to a note that already exists, but it's better to start over with a new note.

Edit the note sharing options

Once your note is ready to use, you can begin the process of adding another person as a collaborator, which means they can only read and edit everything in that note. To get started, tap the More button in the top right or left, then tap Share Note.

Now click on Sharing Options and make sure that Changes can be made option is checked under Permission. You should also toggle off Anyone can add people if you want to be the only person who can add collaborators to your note. Return to the last page when you are finished configuring these settings.

Add a collaborator and share the link

Next, choose a way to share the note, which you can send via text, email, social media, and more. And if you scroll through the sharing options, you can also select Copy Link, which copies the note's link to your clipboard and allows you to paste it wherever you want.

In this example, we'll choose the Copy link to share note option.

At the top of the Copy Link page, enter the email address or phone number of the person you want to access the note. You can also click the add icon to search your contacts. Adding a contact to the note is required, and if you share the link without adding a contact, the other person can't see or edit the note, even using the link.

Finally, tap Copy Link to copy the note's link to your clipboard and share it with the collaborator.

Communicate secretly via notes

The other person, the receiving party, must now open the note link and accept the invitation. If he agrees, it will be redirected to the Notes app and to the collaborative note you just created.

To communicate, simply type something into the note, which the other person will be able to see in real time, without having to hit send. They will also receive a notification any time the note is changed.

Each person in the note will be shown the color of their note, just for a moment, so that everyone who wrote that message knows. You can also swipe up from the middle of the note to see who wrote the letter, as well as when the letter was written and any corresponding colors.

You can also click Share Notes, go to Manage Shared Note, and then switch to Highlight All Changes or Highlight all changes. This way, all messages will always be highlighted in the corresponding color, making the conversation easier to read.

And if you want to keep your communications more secure, delete your message or the other person's message from the note. This way your conversation will be more like on Snapchat, with ephemeral or short-lived messages that strangers can't see if they're snooping on your notes. You can do this with any text in your notes, as well as photos, videos, links, graphics, or any other attachments you add to the note.

Permanently delete your secret chat

If you are the owner of the note and want to keep all the conversations and prevent others from editing or controlling them, you can do so easily.

At the top right, click on the View Participants button and then click on Manage Shared Note.

To remove a participant, you can either swipe left on their name and tap Remove or you can click on their name and tap Remove Access.

Additionally, you can tap the Stop sharing option, which will not only remove the participants from the note, but also delete the note from all of their devices.

If you're not the note owner, you can just delete the note from the Notes app.
