In the iOS 16 update, the way to record and send voice messages on the iPhone has been changed, here's how it works now.

To record a voice message in the Messages app on iOS 15, you can tap and hold the Voice Messages button in the text entry field in the conversation. Then you can leave it to preview before sending it or swipe up to send it right away. This method is no longer available in the iOS 16 update on the iPhone.

The voice message button in the text entry field has been replaced with a new dictate button, so if you try to use that to send a voice message, nothing happens. And if you try to long-press the dictation microphone icon, iOS will indicate that the voice message button has moved to the app drawer. Even if your app drawer is hidden, iOS will show you the new button.

The change also appears on the iPadOS 16.1 update for the iPad, which is still in beta.

Using the voice messaging app

When you open the new Voice Messages app in the app drawer, its interface will replace the keyboard. You can swipe up or double-click the expand icon to show the timeline, then swipe down or double-click the collapse dash to make the window smaller. In both offers, you can send a voice message in two ways.

Click to register

◉ Press the microphone button to start recording.

◉ Press the stop button when finished.

◉ Press the play button to preview the voice message before sending it, the X in the text input field to ignore the recording, or the send button in the text input field to send the voice message.

Long press to record

◉ Touch and hold the microphone button to start and continue recording. While holding it down, the microphone button turns into a send button.

◉ Release your finger above the send button when you are done to send the voice message immediately, or slide your finger out until the send button turns into an X, then release your finger to discard the recording.

Receive voice messages

When it comes to receiving voice messages, nothing has changed. You can still click play or lift the iPhone to listen to the voice message. The messages disappear after two minutes unless you tap "Keep," which appears for both the sender and receiver. It is also possible to turn off "Expire" in the message settings to remove the two-minute limit.

To enable Raise to Listen, go to Settings -> Messages, scroll down to the Audio Messages section, and toggle on Raise to Listen. After turning it on, you can hold the iPhone close to your ear to listen to incoming messages. After you listen to it, Raise to Listen will change to Raise to Talk, so you can bring your iPhone closer to your mouth and start recording a response.
