The watchOS 9 update introduces a new low power mode for Apple Watch 4 and later to extend battery life by disabling or limiting some features and sensors while enabled, such as Always On Screen, Background Heart Rate Monitoring, and others. It is in low power mode.

In a support document published by Apple, it detailed specific features that are disabled or affected when Low Power Mode is turned on:

Low Power Mode turns off these features:

◉ Always On Screen Display.

◉ Heart rate notifications that sense irregular heartbeat, high heart rate and low heart rate.

◉ Heart rate measurements in the background.

◉ Blood oxygen measurements in the background.

◉ Reminders to start exercising.

Low Power Mode turns off these features when the iPhone is not near you

◉ Connect to WiFi and cellular data.

◉ Incoming phone calls and notifications.

Low Power Mode affects these features

◉ It may take longer to make a phone call.

◉ Reduce background app refresh.

◉ Siri can take longer to process and respond to commands.

◉ Passes and transitions may look less smooth.

For safety purposes, Apple says that the Fall Detection feature continues to operate in low-power mode and is not disabled or even reduced.

To enable Low Power Mode on the watch

◉ Swipe up on the watch screen to open Control Center

◉ Click on the battery percentage button, and turn on the low power mode.

When the Apple Watch's battery percentage drops to 10%, a Low Power Mode popup appears asking users if they want to turn on the feature. Low power mode is automatically turned off when the watch is charged to 80%, unless users manually turn it on for a specified number of days.

Apple also says that users can automatically turn on Low Power Mode when they start a workout, with heart rate metrics still turned on, for example.

Apple notes that when Low Power Mode is enabled without the iPhone near you, and you open an app that requires a data connection, your Wi-Fi or cellular connection will resume in order for the app to function properly, which can cause "significant battery consumption."

The new Low Power Mode is separate from the Apple Watch's Power Reserve or Power Reserve mode, which only displays the watch when enabled.

The clock is displayed like this:
