According to a recently published patent, Apple is working on new box technologies AirPodsIt includes the integration of a touch screen into the case, allowing users to interact with their devices in a more intuitive and efficient way, without having to physically handle the device itself. It is not clear if this technology will be released in the near future, but it is an interesting development of what the AirPods case will be in the future.

In September 2021, Apple filed a patent application titled “Devices, Methods, and GUI Interactions with the Headphone Case” which was recently published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent application provides several examples and detailed images of what a headphone case with a touch screen could look like.

According to the patent, the speaker box is usually passive in nature meaning it has no function other than charging devices, and has no input to sound or other interactive operations. To enhance the functionality of the wireless headphone cases and give users more control over them, an interactive user interface can be integrated into the case. This will allow users to control various functions associated with the headphones.

The patent says:

“A device for holding headphones that has the ability to manage their functions such as controlling playback, switching between audio sources, and changing audio output modes. In addition, it is able to communicate information to the user through a touch screen. These methods and interfaces can be used in conjunction with standard methods for controlling wireless headphones and can simplify user-device interaction by reducing the amount and complexity of inputs required, resulting in a more efficient human-machine interface.”

One possible application that Apple is considering includes a touch screen, built into the AirPods case. This display will feature a graphical user interface and haptic feedback, allowing users to control their music playback, adjust the volume, and interact with their music in various ways without even having to focus visually on the case. In a broader and more comprehensive sense, this is all to manage Apple Music.

In another scenario, the case could otherwise react to certain hand gestures such as tapping and swiping, allowing users to navigate through onscreen content and activate Siri. The user can also press the case to perform some functions such as changing the listening mode on the AirPods, likely referring to noise cancellation and transparency.

Apple suggests that the case could include additional processors and memory modules that would allow it to execute specific instructions traditionally associated with smartphones, computers, and other connected devices. In some cases, the case's touchscreen can provide interactive access to a range of iPhone apps, including Phone, Mail, Messages, Camera, Calendar, Weather, Maps, and more.

The patent indicates that incorporating a touch screen into the AirPods case design can help address and reduce issues with controlling wireless headphones, resulting in a better user experience.

Just like with any patent, it is uncertain whether or not Apple will use this technology in the near future, but as we mentioned, the patent provides a look at Apple's way of thinking, and the possible shape of future technology.

Since the initial release of AirPods in 2016, Apple has been striving to improve the functionality of the AirPods case across different generations. The AirPods Pro case, in particular, has seen notable improvements including the inclusion of MagSafe wireless charging, the U1 Ultra Wideband chip to support precise tracking via Find My, a lanyard loop, and a built-in speaker that provides status updates and helps locate the device, as well as Longer battery life.

What do you think of the technology contained in this patent? And do you think a product like that will enhance the user experience? Tell us in the comments.
