According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is likely to unveil a major tweak to Siri at its developer conference. This change will include getting rid of the phrase “Hey Siri” to activate Siri hands-free. If Apple actually did this, what alternative could it offer?

In a recent tweet, Gorman reiterated that the tweak to Siri's trigger phrase could be one of the announcements that will be made at the developer conference. Last November, Gorman mentioned that Apple is working on a way to improve Siri's ability to understand and respond to commands without having to use "Hey Siri" as a trigger. He believes that instead, users will only need to say "Siri". In this context, Apple stated:

The company is working on an initiative to drop “Hey” in the launch phrase so that the user only needs to say “Siri,” with a command directly. While this may seem like a small change, making the switch is a technical challenge that requires a great deal of AI training and basic engineering work.

What makes it complicated is how well Siri can understand the single phrase "Siri" in different accents. And because having two words “Hey Siri” makes it more likely that the system will pick up the signal correctly.”

The proposed change would make Siri similar to Amazon's voice assistant Alexa, allowing Siri to be activated simply by starting a command with the word "Siri," similar to the way Alexa does it.

Gorman also mentioned that Apple is concurrently focusing on strengthening Siri's integration with third-party apps and services. This integration will enable Siri to provide more helpful assistance by leveraging additional information from these apps.

Gorman said that changes are expected to be introduced to Siri sometime in 2023 or 2024, but in another tweet he indicated that there is a high possibility that these changes will be announced at the developer conference.

Given the strong rumors surrounding a mixed reality headset, which will include voice controls, it would make sense to introduce improvements to Siri along with the unveiling of the new device.

Do you think that modifying the phrase “Hey Siri” will make a difference, or is this the beginning of making Siri really smart and more obedient? Tell us in the comments.
