May support old iPhone devices IOS 17 updateHowever, this does not mean that it will have all its features, as some features in major iOS updates every year require chipsets with certain technical qualities to ensure smooth operation. Therefore, it is not surprising that some iOS 17 features that rely on the latest machine learning algorithms require newer chips to function well. Some features are designed to function only with a specific component that they cannot function without, such as a LiDAR sensor. Therefore, you should be aware of the following new features that require at least an iPhone 12.

StandBy is suitable for always-on displays

This feature turns the iPhone into a smart dashboard when it is shipped on the MagSafe holder in a horizontal orientation, and the iPhone becomes a screen that displays useful information that can be easily accessed, and is understood with just a quick glance. It provides key information in a concise manner.

You can also customize the tools that are displayed on the screen, and add user interface elements with ease, as you can add the clock in different shapes, and add pictures, allowing you to see your favorite photos or memories while charging the iPhone.

You can also see larger notifications and see them clearly from afar, as well as the dimension of buttons are provided larger and clearer, providing quick access to certain features or actions.

This feature relies primarily on Always-On Display technology, so it will work as it should on iPhone-supporting devices such as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while iPhones that do not come with that technology may require clicking on the screen. To access the Standby or StandBy feature.

The point-and-talk feature requires a lidar scanner

The Accessibility Point and Speak feature in magnifier detection mode allows blind and visually impaired users to point and point at buttons or labels that are displayed through the camera, such as home appliances, to describe or read them aloud. This feature aims to provide greater accessibility and independence to individuals with visual impairments, enabling them to interact with and understand different objects more effectively.

Since the LiDAR Scanner is required for this feature, it only works on iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Reactions to user gestures in FaceTime

In the iOS 17 update, well-known iMessage effects such as hearts, balloons, fireworks, clip art, lasers, and more are now available on FaceTime calls. Augmented reality effects fill the camera frame and can be used in compatible third-party video conferencing applications such as Zoom and WebEx Meetings.

You can invoke a real-time reaction manually or with a simple hand gesture, like a thumbs up. However, gesture responses are only available on iPhone 12 or later when using the front-facing camera.

On older iPhone models such as the iPhone 11, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE for 2020, which already support the iOS 17 update, you will need to manually activate gesture responses through the Control Center.

Built-in typing predictions are not available on older iPhones

In the iOS 17 update, machine learning technology scans each keystroke to anticipate upcoming text, letting you complete words or even entire sentences. When writing in applications such as Messages or Notes, you can use the predictive text suggestion displayed in gray by pressing the space bar.

This feature can greatly speed up text entry, but it only works on iPhone 12 and later when using the English keyboard. The feature is not supported on iPhone 11 and earlier models. Also, this feature does not work in third-party keyboard apps such as Google's Gboard and Microsoft SwiftKey.

Enhanced autocorrect is language and device limited

According to a post in Apple's Newsroom, the AutoCorrect feature in iOS 17 has been redesigned to use an advanced on-device machine learning language model for accurate word prediction.

In addition to improved accuracy, corrected words are temporarily highlighted to make changes more noticeable. Users can quickly undo a corrected word by clicking on it. The improved language model also enables wider handling of grammatical errors in complete sentences compared to previous versions.

The improved autocorrect in the iOS 17 update currently supports these languages: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Korean, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, and Thai. Enhanced autocorrect is only limited to iPhone 12 and later models.

Why don't some iOS 17 features work on old iPhones?

The previously mentioned jobs are highly dependent on machine learning and artificial intelligence. The coprocessor enables the Neural Engine of the iPhone to implement AI algorithms separately from the CPU or GPU, ensuring energy efficiency and reducing the need for cloud computing resources.

Not all motor neurons have the same capabilities. The Neural Engine in the A14 Bionic chip for iPhone 12 is twice as fast as the previous version, and the A14 chip also includes second-generation machine learning matrix accelerators, which are 10 times faster than those in the A13 chip in iPhone 11.

Thus, the iPhone 12 can perform tasks related to artificial intelligence, deep learning, and neural networks at a much higher speed and with improved performance compared to previous iPhone models.

If you own an iPhone 12, you won't miss gesture feedback, improved autocorrect, and the other iOS 17 capabilities we mentioned.
