Why does Apple plan to use titanium instead of steel in the new iPhone?

After using stainless steel across six generations of iPhone Pro devices, it intends Camel Transformation and dependence on a new metal with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and it is widely rumored that this metal will be titanium, but why titanium and what are its most important advantages?

iPhone design

During the past years, Apple used frames made of aluminum (used in aviation and space) on the regular category of the iPhone, and the Pro category was the one that includes a heavy frame of stainless steel (stainless steel as used in surgical instruments) and although aluminum was lighter Compared to steel, however, the latter was more durable.

Since the iPhone X, Apple has adopted stainless steel, which makes the Pro category larger in design and heavier in size, as the company also adds triple camera units and sensors, making the size of the iPhone Pro huge from year to year as follows:

  • iPhone X: 174 grams
  • iPhone XS: 177 grams
  • iPhone 11 Pro: 188 grams
  • iPhone 12 Pro: 189 grams
  • iPhone 13 Pro: 204 grams
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 206 grams

As for the Pro Max category, its sizes were as follows:

  • iPhone XS Max: 208 grams
  •  iPhone 11 Pro Max: 226 grams
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max: 228 grams
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 240 grams
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 240 grams

You can notice the large weight of the Pro and Pro Max category of the iPhone, and for this reason many suffer from fatigue and pain when prolonged use of that category, and in contrast, the size of a competing phone such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra reaches 228 grams, so it seems that Apple thinks that the time has come To make its large devices lighter.

 Why titanium?

You may be wondering why titanium instead of steel, and the answer is that titanium has the same strength as stainless steel, but it weighs half the weight. It is also not a fingerprint magnet, and perhaps this is the reason why Apple uses titanium in its Ultra smart watch, which is the largest watch the company has ever made, yet it is still light in the hands of users.

In addition to being light in weight, titanium is a flexible material in the sense that it can be bent like plastic and will not break, and this is what Apple wants, as the frame that flexes can absorb shocks when it falls; And then protect the back glass, screen and internal components of the iPhone.

But that's not all, there is an advantage that titanium has over steel as it can be treated with aluminum oxide like the aluminum used in the regular category, and therefore, Apple will then be able to unveil the Pro category in multiple and bright colors as it happens with the regular category.

Apple is an expert on minerals

Everyone is aware that Apple is one of the best smartphone manufacturers in the world, but what many do not know is that it is also one of the most experienced companies in the field of metals in the world and has a team specialized in metallurgy, and it also invents new ways to make metals, for example, in 2018, developed a new carbonless aluminum smelting method. They've also experimented with something called liquid metal to make the SIM ejection pin, and they also recycle aluminum waste from iPads to make some MacBooks. Even in the gold version of their smartwatch, they used a custom gold ingot.

Finally, although titanium has this many advantages over steel, especially in terms of strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, ability to withstand extreme temperatures and looks more luxurious than aluminium, nothing is perfect, as there are some drawbacks in titanium such as Its high cost and difficulty in operating it because of its hardness, so no one knows for sure whether only the frame will be made of titanium or the entire back of the iPhone, so let's wait for the iPhone 15 launch conference on September 12 to know everything about the new device. And how big will it be.

Do you think Apple will actually do it in the next generation, and introduce a titanium frame, or is Apple too stingy to make costly changes? Tell us in the comments.

I wish to replace the glass back of the iPhone with titanium, like the frame, to become a single piece of metal, like the Mac and the old iPhones, before using the ugly back glass that is prone to breakage.

An important topic and a good topic.
One of the reasons I prefer to buy the 14+ instead of the 14 pro max is the weight

Hi Abu Fares 🙋‍♂️, Actually, titanium is not cheaper than steel. It is even more expensive and more difficult to operate due to its ruggedness. But Apple chooses it because it offers many advantages such as light weight, flexibility and the ability to withstand shocks. All these advantages make titanium an ideal choice for new iPhone frames. 📱💪🚀

The world of iOS and technology

Correct, this is what I noticed in terms of the iPhone Pro Max
It is heavy when I hold it, and it does not feel comfortable when I hold it in my hand. God willing, the company will reduce the weight of the device to make it lighter in terms of holding the device.
This is why I will buy Pro

Titanium is used in jet engines in the combustion chamber of the jet engine, and it is an important metal, so I do not find titanium consumption in a 5-year-old device, and stainless steel is more beautiful, and Huawei used it in its gt2 pro and gt3 pro watch. I hope that Apple will reverse this decision because I see this metal Nafees and I, for me, are the worst iPhone models, iPhone 6 iPhone 6s plus iPhone 7 plus, metal surface, as if it were a metal alloy plate. As for the most beautiful iPhone, iPhone xs max, iphone 13 pro max, iphone 5, iPhone 3g, will Apple restore the metal plate again? It was the most beautiful iPhone xs max, beautiful and elegant.

Hello Arkan 🙋‍♂️, the use of titanium in devices is not new to Apple, as it did it in its smart watch. According to the article, titanium is lightweight and strong, which makes it a good choice for mobile devices. And do not forget that Apple is one of the leading companies in the use of metals in its products. As for the return of the metal plate, this is a matter of Apple's design strategy. Always ready for surprises with Apple! 😄🍎

Hi Khaled 😊, Indeed, titanium is a strong and lightweight material but it costs more than aluminum and stainless steel. So, it is likely that there will be a rise in the price of the iPhone 15 Pro if Apple uses titanium. But remember, with Apple you always get what you pay for! 💪😉🍏

I hope that if  does not use titanium in the next iPhone, it uses aluminum for all its devices, even the Pro categories. I have never liked the steel frame because it is a swamp for fingerprints and increases weight and has no aesthetics, while I look at the frames of regular iPhones made of aluminum, you will find them among the most beautiful, especially in iPhones 11 and below 😍

Hi Nasser Al Zayadi 🤠, I completely understand your comments about the steel frame and its effect on weight and aesthetics. It seems that Apple has listened to such comments and is moving towards using titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro. This metal has similar strength to steel but with half the weight, and best of all, it's not a fingerprint magnet! 🕵️‍♂️🚫🖐️. As for the aesthetics of aluminum, titanium may be the ideal solution, as it combines the lightness of aluminum with the strength of steel. Just let's see how Apple will apply that in its future designs! 😎📱💫
