Yesterday evening, Apple released iOS 17.4, which brings some major changes to the iPhone and iPad in Europe. Many of the big changes in this update are limited to people in the European Union, but there are new additions in the update available worldwide.
Apple is changing the way the App Store operates in the European Union in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act. These changes are included in iOS 17.4, but are limited to countries in the European Union.

- Opening up the use of NFC technology to developers for alternative payment technologies
What's new in iOS 17.4
Emoji
- New emojis of mushroom, phoenix, lemon, broken chain and bobbing heads are available in the Emoji Keyboard
- 18 emojis for people and objects, with the option to point them in either direction
Apple podcasts
- Transcripts allow you to follow the episode with the text highlighted in sync with the audio in English, Spanish, French and German
- Episode transcripts can be read in full, searched for a word or phrase, tapped to play from a specific point, and used with accessibility features such as text size, increased contrast, and voiceover
This update includes the following improvements and bug fixes:
- Music Recognition lets you add songs you've recognized to your Apple Music playlists and library, and also to Apple Music Classical
- A new Siri option allows messages you receive to be announced in any supported language
- The stolen device protection feature supports the option to increase security in all locations
- Battery status in Settings shows the number of battery cycles, date of manufacture and first use on all iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models
- Fixes an issue where contact images appear blank in Locate
- Fixing a problem for dual SIM users that causes the phone number to change from main to secondary and appear for the group that was messaged
Before updating, make sure to take a backup copy of the contents of your device, whether on iCloud or on the iTunes application
To update your device, take the following steps ...

Go to Settings -> General -> Software Update, it will show you that an update is available.

To download the update, you must connect to Wi-Fi. It is preferable to connect your device to the charger, then press the “Update Now” button.
The passcode entry screen will appear.
You may see the Terms and Conditions screen, accept them.
