Whether you're adding comments to a screenshot or creating photo memes to post, there are many ways to add text to a photo on iPhone. Here are five proven ways to do just that.
Add text using Markup writing and drawing tools
The simplest way to add text to a photo is to use the iPhone's built-in Markup tool, available through the Editing feature in the Photos app. This method is easy to implement, but it is limited in terms of options. You can choose the font, text size, and color, but there aren't many options for adding decorative effects. To use:
◉ Open the “Photos” application and choose the photo you want to edit.
◉ Click on “Edit” in the upper corner.
◉ Next, press the “Markup” button or the tip of the pen in the upper corner of the screen.
◉ You will be warned that Live Photo mode will be turned off if you continue. Click “OK” to continue and the editing tools interface will appear.
◉Along the bottom of the screen, you'll see a variety of pens, an eraser, a ruler, a color wheel, and a plus sign “+”. Press the plus sign “+” and choose “Add Text” to add a text box to your photo.
◉ You can now drag the text box to wherever you want. Then double-click inside the text box to edit the text and type your message.
◉ At the bottom of the screen, you can adjust the font, text size, alignment, formatting, and text color. While choosing the color, you can also adjust the opacity of your text.
◉ Once finished, tap “Done” in the upper corner of the screen. You can edit the text later by returning to the “Markup” menu using the pen icon located in the upper corner of the screen. Share your photo as you normally would from the Photos app and the text will be included.
Add text using Freeform
Freeform is an Apple app announced as part of the iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 update. It is a collaboration application between a group of people working together on a board or whiteboard in real time. You can use Freeform to take notes, share ideas, exchange files, draw, annotate, handwrite and more, all in real-time with your colleagues. So it's perfect for combining text and images in one place.
But there is one big drawback, which is that you can only export Freeform documents to PDF files, so you will need to add one more step and convert the document to an image before sharing.
To get started, download the Freeform app from the App Store for free.
Next, start a new panel using the “New” button located at the top corner of the screen.
Press the “Media” button at the bottom of the screen and choose “Photos or Videos” to select an image from your photo library, or “Insert from” to select an image from your files. You can also copy from somewhere, click anywhere on the canvas, and then “Paste.”
Once your image is locked in place, tap the “Text Box” button at the bottom of the screen. Drag the text box where you want, and then double-click inside it to edit the text. Use the text formatting tools at the top of the keyboard to customize text size, color, and alignment.
Add more images and text if you like, then when you're ready to export, click the three dots and choose "Export as PDF" and choose where you want to save it.
Finally, launch the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut. Add a “Make Image from PDF Page” action. Then change the variable “PNG Image” to whatever you want, and the variable “PDF” to “Shortcut Input”. Add a “Save to Photo Album” action, then press the “i” button and make sure “Show in Share Sheet” is selected. Name your shortcut, such as “PDF Page to Image” and save it.
Now open the PDF file you created on FreeForm, tap Share, then tap the “PDF Page to Image” shortcut you just created. Your photo will be present in Photos, where you can edit it as you want.
Add text using the Pages app
Pages is a free Apple application that competes with Microsoft Word. It may be useful and contain some solutions.
This method may not be ideal and may result in a lower-than-desired image quality. You can use the Document Options menu to change the orientation to landscape mode, which may help restore some accuracy if the image is landscape.
First, you'll need to download the Pages app from the App Store.
Next, open the app and create a new blank document, ignoring Apple's templates, using the Start Writing option.
With a new document open, press the plus sign “+” and select the Media tab. You can choose “Photo or Video” from your photo library, or use “Insert from…” to add from files. You can also copy an image, tap and hold, then choose “Paste.”
Tap your image to select it, then tap the Formatting brush icon to reveal more options. Under Arrange, choose More Options and set Text Wrap to None. This instructs Pages not to move text if it overlaps the image.
Now, press the plus sign again, and on the Charts tab, select Text to add a text box. Double-click inside the text box and edit it. Finish and click the text box to select it, then use the Format paintbrush icon to edit the font, size, color, and more in the Text tab.
Add more images, charts, and anything else you see fit. Then press the three dots button “…” and choose “Export” followed by “Images” to export it as an image. Use the “Save Image” button to add the image to your photo library.
Finally, find the image and press “Edit” and then crop the white space. Then share it.

Press “Done” and then add anything else you want to your photo using the built-in tools. When you're ready, tap the three-dot “…” button at the top corner of the screen and then select “Save” and the photo will be saved to your camera roll.

Use a computer
Adding text to an image on the iPhone can be difficult and the options are not great, because the small screen is not suitable for graphic design work, so if you want to get creative it is better to use a computer instead.
There are plenty of free and even budget-friendly editing software you can use for this purpose such as Affinity Photo وPhotoshop alternatives Other suitable, or completely free photo editing programs such as GIMP.

Although I am an iPhone user, frankly, Samsung is creative in these matters, and from the same phone without any external applications. I hope Apple learns from them.
Is there an application for translation?
There are many translation applications, the most famous of which are Apple Translate and Google Translate
I have been using the Phonto application since I published it in one of the Friday articles several years ago. As for the GIMP application, I do not recommend it because I heard that it sells user data. Thank you for this article.
Hi Mufleh 🙋♂️, Thank you for the note about GIMP. We appreciate you sharing information and personal experiences, as it helps enrich the content and provide the best experience for our readers. 😊👍🏻
In the past, I used to use Fonto, then I moved to Procreate on the iPad. You can download fonts and brushes. There is a better way. Download the Canva application, which has excellent free options for editing images, generating images, and much more.
Check out the tools for backgrounds. There is a background with the Israeli flag.
