iPhone 17 Pro: 48MP telephoto lens could change the rules of photography

Since the launch of the first iPhone, Apple has consistently strived to improve its cameras to deliver a professional photography experience. With each new release, we see innovative technologies that make photography easier and more enjoyable. Now, With iPhone 17 Pro Expected to arrive in September, Apple appears to be preparing to introduce a quantum leap in its 48-megapixel telephoto lens. Recent reports have revealed a major upgrade to the telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro, which could change the way we use optical and digital zoom. In this article, we'll review everything we know about this exciting upgrade and how it will impact the photography experience, especially in portrait and everyday photography.

From iPhoneIslam.com, a close-up of the back of the iPhone 17 Pro with three rear cameras, including a 48MP telephoto lens, and a sleek metal frame, displayed against a gradient background.

What's new in the iPhone 17 Pro telephoto lens?

From iPhoneIslam.com, a close-up of the back of the silver iPhone 17 Pro, showing three camera lenses—including a 48MP telephoto lens—along with the flash and side buttons on a black background.

According to reliable leaks, including one from renowned leaker Majin Bu, the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, compared to the 12-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This significant increase in resolution means sharper and more detailed photos, even when zoomed in.

The high 48MP resolution allows the camera to capture fine details, such as strands of hair or the texture of clothing, making photos look more realistic.

With this resolution, Apple can use digital cropping to simulate optical zoom with higher quality, as we'll explain later.

3.5x optical zoom is better than 5x

From iPhoneIslam.com, A person holds an iPhone 16 Pro, displaying a figurine on its screen. The actual statue appears in the background inside a large building with arched windows and architectural details, and was captured perfectly using the phone's powerful camera or optical zoom.

At first, the move from a 5x optical zoom (120mm equivalent) to a 3.5x zoom (85mm equivalent) may seem like a reduction in capabilities. In reality, this change may be more practical for many users.

The 3.5x optical zoom is better and is ideal for portrait and everyday photography, allowing you to capture images from a closer distance without having to move too far away from the subject. This is especially useful in confined spaces, such as homes or cafes.

If you're taking a portrait of your child in a small room, 3.5x zoom will allow you to get the perfect frame without having to step back too much, unlike 5x zoom which might force you to step out of the room!

Digital Cropping: The Secret to Flexible Zoom

From iPhoneIslam.com, a close-up of the iPhone 17 Pro's screen shows a group of people being photographed at an indoor event, highlighting the phone's impressive 48MP camera with vivid detail.

One of the most notable features of the new telephoto lens is its ability to leverage 48MP resolution to deliver high-quality digital zoom. This technology is similar to what Apple uses in the iPhone 16's main Fusion camera, where high resolution digital cropping is used to simulate 2x zoom. Here's how it works.

Instead of relying solely on the optical lens, the iPhone 17 Pro can use the central portion of the 48MP image to produce a 12MP image at higher zoom levels, while maintaining image quality.

The result is flexible zooming up to levels above 3.5x without significant loss of detail, making for more versatile shooting.

Why is this update ideal for portrait photography?

If you're a fan of portrait photography, the new telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro might be just right for you. Here's why:

The ideal distance, 3.5x (85mm) telephoto is considered the gold standard in portrait photography because it provides a natural perspective without distorting facial features.

Better depth, as the lens will produce a smoother and more beautiful bokeh effect, making the people in the photo stand out more.

Better indoor lighting: Thanks to high resolution and advanced computational processing, images will be clearer even in low-light conditions.

Imagine you're at a birthday party at home and want to take a portrait of your friend blowing out candles. With the iPhone 16 Pro, you might need to move farther away due to the 5x zoom, which can be difficult in a crowded room. With the iPhone 17 Pro, the 3.5x zoom allows you to stay closer to the table and capture a clear, beautiful photo with stunning bokeh, even in low light.

How does Apple benefit from computing?

Apple is increasingly relying on computational photography to enhance camera performance. In the iPhone 17 Pro, this technology will:

Improve the quality of digital zoom. As we mentioned, high resolution allows for excellent digital cropping.

Lighting processing, where the camera will be able to improve images in low light, making night photography clearer.

Noise reduction, where computational processing will reduce noise in images, especially when using high zoom.

Compared to the iPhone 16 Pro: Is it worth the upgrade?

From iPhoneIslam.com, two iPhones are shown from the back, highlighting their cameras; the left features a rectangular module, while the right shows the iPhone 17 Pro with its distinctive triangular lens arrangement and advanced 48MP telephoto.

If you own an iPhone 16 Pro or are considering purchasing one, you may be wondering: Is the iPhone 17 Pro worth the wait? Here's a quick comparison:

iPhone 16 Pro, 12MP telephoto lens, 5x optical zoom, good quality but limited in low light.

As for the iPhone 17 Pro, if the leaks are true, it will have three 48-megapixel rear cameras: the primary Fusion camera, the Ultra Wide camera, and the new Telephoto camera.

This development makes the iPhone 17 Pro a significant milestone in Apple's development pipeline, reflecting a shift toward high-resolution sensors rather than an overreliance on traditional lenses.

So we'll have a 48MP telephoto lens, 3.5x optical zoom with improved digital zoom, better low-light performance, and more flexibility.

If you rely heavily on portrait photography or need a versatile camera, the iPhone 17 Pro may be a better choice.

With a 48-megapixel telephoto lens and 3.5x optical zoom, Apple looks set to take photography to a new level. Whether you're capturing professional portraits or everyday shots, this lens offers unparalleled flexibility and quality. Thanks to advanced computational processing and high resolution, you'll be able to capture stunning images in any conditions.

Speaking in general about all the phone's specifications and especially the cameras: Apple treats its customers as if it's the only one in the market!! Its rivals crush and trample it and it doesn't move a muscle. And always the first word when presenting the product: The best phone Apple makes 😅😅 😒🥴

Welcome, Bashir Barakat! 😄 I can't deny that Apple loves to present its products in an exciting way, but let's be honest, can we expect anything else from the company that changed the face of technology? 🍏🚀

Of course, every company has its own vision and market strategy. Apple prefers to focus on product quality and fine details, even if that means not rushing to include all the latest technology in its phones. 🐢💡

Useful article Thank you

I will upgrade to iPhone 17 Pro Max, God willing.

Unfortunately, I have two shelves in my library that are part of my compulsive hoarding, which is a collection of my precious cameras and telescopes over 30 years.

Imagine that all modern cameras were unable to surpass the capabilities of a Japanese camera I bought in 2006 and used to document a tourist trip to several countries in Central and Northern Europe.
The funny thing is that this camera uses a very small hard disk, the size of an SD memory card, and regular batteries. It has a 2-megapixel resolution, which was revolutionary at the time, but it has a 40x zoom, and I have taken thousands of amazing professional photos with it.

Welcome to Dr. Hamoud Al-Harbi 🙌🏼

I'm excited for your upcoming upgrade to iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I expect you to have an amazing journey with it! 🚀

As for the Japanese camera I bought in 2006, I really admire the good old days when such exciting technology was born. These old-fashioned gadgets always have great stories to tell, and I can only imagine the amazing photos you captured during your travels in Europe. 📸

But, over the past 48 years, technology has evolved tremendously and we now have XNUMXMP cameras in our pockets! 😱

For example, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will raise the bar for photography thanks to an improved Telephoto lens and amazing resolution.

There's still plenty of excitement to be had in discovering new cameras and new innovations. The future looks more exciting than ever! 🎉🚀

iPhone (Islam) Respect the name and stay away from Western cultures and the holidays of the enemies of Islam. We do not have a birthday. This is an innovation and forbidden by Islamic law. If you replaced the example by saying a graduation party or a wedding occasion or anything like that, it would be better than giving examples of occasions for non-Muslims.

Apple should work on addressing the shortcomings of lenses by capturing the true dimensions of a human face up close, for example, and simulating a camera that can do that. Why not use artificial intelligence to capture images in a way that mimics the use of superior cameras? We are tired of the inwardly concave face, and the solution is software or increasing the lens size instead of increasing the image size. Remember that you bought a digital camera twenty years ago with a power of only 2 megapixels, and its images were comparable to the iPhone lens compared to that time, and the reason is the strength of the lens, as is known. With the introduction of artificial intelligence, the size problem can be overcome by simulating and correcting the distorted images currently instead of excessive pixelation.

Hello Suleiman Muhammad 🙋‍♂️, I completely agree that the lens plays a major role in image quality. However, Apple already uses artificial intelligence in its photography technology and the improvements it makes to the cameras in each new release. In addition, we are talking about a smartphone, not a professional camera, so the goal is to provide a comprehensive experience with good quality and acceptable dimensions. Therefore, some may find it difficult to reconcile the lens size with the ideal dimensions of the phone. Thank you for your insightful feedback. We always look forward to hearing from users 😊📱📸

We demand an iPhone without cameras and only the front camera!
Why do I have to pay for rear cameras when I don't use them?
You don't believe me? Come on, I'll show you the photo I have in the studio on all my devices, from iPhone to iPod, in several versions and generations!

Hello Mohammed Jassim 🙋‍♂️, I think you're taking on a new challenge here, "Life without rear cameras" 😄! But let me remind you that technological advancements often come with advantages that we don't appreciate until we use them. The day may come when you need those rear cameras, and maybe you'll become the famous photographer you've always been inside! 😉📸 Everything in addition to the fact that these cameras add aesthetics to the design. So, even if you don't use them, they will give your device a unique external charm.

Ayman

Should I buy a camera or a smartphone?
Mobile phone companies have nothing new to play with except cameras.
Personally, I only use the camera when necessary on special occasions.

Hello Ayman 🙋‍♂️, It depends on your needs and personal preferences. If you only use your camera occasionally, a smartphone with a good camera may be more than enough for you. However, if image quality is important to you, you may want to consider purchasing an external camera. Always remember that smartphones like the iPhone 17 Pro offer more flexibility and portability, while traditional cameras offer higher image quality in some situations. Choose the one that best covers your needs! 😊📸📱

Front selfies are enough! I don't take pictures of anyone, and I don't care about anyone. Tell us about them even if we cook on them because of their large number!
Speaking of cooking, it’s the same. You buy a cooking oven with several burners for the house, and in the end, the bride doesn’t know how to cook all the food outside the house. You look for this generation, the generation of restaurants, instant noodles, and chips!
I'm not from the generation of photography and showing off. I just need a selfie to remember my gray hair youth!
