Apple added in an update iOS 26 Two new features, Captive Assist and Wi-Fi Aware, will change the way you use Wi-Fi on your iPhone or iPad! Apple offers a more seamless and open wireless experience. In this article, we'll explore these features and how they will impact your daily experience, focusing on the impact of the European Digital Markets Act (DMA), which prompted Apple to offer alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay.

Captive Assist feature

Captive Assist refers to restricted, protected, or closed networks that require constant logins. From now on, repetitive logins to these public Wi-Fi networks are a thing of the past. We've all certainly experienced the annoying experience of trying to connect to a public Wi-Fi network at a hotel, airport, or coffee shop. We often have to fill out a web form on our iPhone, then repeat the same process on our iPad or Mac. With Captive Assist in iOS 26, this problem is a thing of the past, as we mentioned!
How does Captive Assist work?
When you log in to a public Wi-Fi network on one of your Apple devices, your login credentials are automatically shared with your other devices via iCloud Keychain, automatically syncing your devices.
It also saves time, as you won't need to re-enter information or fill out forms on each device separately.
This feature is available on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe, making connecting to public Wi-Fi more convenient.

Imagine you're in a busy airport and need a fast Wi-Fi connection to upload a presentation on your Mac, while sending an email from your iPhone. With Captive Assist, once you log in on one device, the others are instantly ready to use. It's a simple step that makes life much easier!
Wi-Fi Aware feature

This feature is considered the open alternative to AirDrop and AirPlay. Smart Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi that is aware of its surroundings and communicates with them, represents a qualitative leap in the world of wireless connectivity. This technology is considered the industry-standard equivalent of Apple Wireless Direct Link, the core technology that powers features like AirDrop and AirPlay on Apple devices. This technology enables direct communication between Apple devices to quickly and securely transfer files, stream media, or share the screen over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This feature does the following:
◉ Direct device-to-device connectivity, enabling peer-to-peer connectivity between Wi-Fi devices without the need for an internet connection or access point.
◉ Framework for developers: Apple offers the Wi-Fi Aware framework for developers, allowing apps to offer new features such as high-speed file transfer, media streaming, and screen sharing.
◉ Universal compatibility: Unlike AirDrop and AirPlay, which are limited to Apple devices, Wi-Fi Aware supports communication with devices from other platforms such as Android and Windows, enhancing interoperability.

Impact of the Digital Markets Act (DMA)
Apple was required to support Wi-Fi Aware on iPhone and iPad in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires Apple to provide alternatives to AirDrop and AirPlay by the end of 2026. But Apple has gone further and decided to make this framework available globally, meaning users around the world will benefit from this technology.
Supported devices
The following devices support the Wi-Fi Aware framework:
◉ iPhone 12 and later.
◉ iPad 10th generation and later.
◉ iPad mini 6th generation and later.
◉ iPad Air 4th generation and later.
◉ iPad Pro 11-inch XNUMXrd generation and later.
◉ iPad Pro 12.9-inch XNUMXth generation and later.
With Captive Assist, you no longer have to re-enter login credentials on each device, saving time and effort. Wi-Fi Aware opens the door to a more comprehensive sharing experience, allowing you to easily send files or stream video to non-Apple devices.
By providing the Wi-Fi Aware framework to developers, Apple enables them to create innovative applications. Imagine an app that lets you share your device's screen with a non-Apple smart TV, or a multiplayer game that runs seamlessly between your iPhone and Android device without the need for an internet connection!
iOS 26 is expected to be released in September 2025, bringing the first apps to take advantage of Wi-Fi Aware. We may also see additional improvements in later updates, such as iOS 27, to enhance the AirDrop and AirPlay experience with greater security and efficiency.
