Don't worry: Apple explains why your iPhone's battery drains after the iOS 26 update.

Every year, with the release of a new major iOS update, the same scenario repeats itself: users rush to install the new update on their devices, and shortly after, complaints begin to appear. “My battery is draining quickly!” “My phone is overheating!” “My device is performing slowly.” These complaints have become an annual tradition with each new release, and iOS 26 is no exception. But this time, Apple has taken a proactive and unusual step to clarify the reason for this phenomenon, in an attempt to reassure iPhone users.

In the release notes for iOS 26, Apple added an explicit warning to iPhone users, explaining that installing the update may temporarily affect battery life, and asserting that this is "normal." This announcement, despite its simplicity, is significant, indicating that Apple is fully aware of the concerns users have about their device's batteries after each update.

Why does battery drain occur after updating?

From the Phone Islam website: Two app icons: one shows a low battery with a rainbow gradient, and the other shows the number 26. The text below says "Battery is draining fast." The issue appears as an iPhone battery drain after the iOS 26 update.

To understand the reason behind this temporary impact on the battery, we must realize that a new update is not just a change to the interface or the addition of new icons. Rather, it is a complex process that requires the device to completely reorganize itself.

Background operations: indexing and reorganization

Once the update installation is complete, the iPhone begins a series of important internal processes. These processes, which occur in the background, are invisible to the user, but they consume a significant amount of processor power and, consequently, the battery. The most notable of these processes include:

Indexing data and files: The new system indexes all your data and files, from photos and documents to contacts, to ensure Spotlight search works efficiently. This process can take hours or even days, depending on the amount of data stored on the device.

Download new assets: The update may include new assets such as fonts, sounds, or new user interface elements, which your iPhone needs to download and install.

Update apps: Many applications need to update themselves to adapt to the new system, which adds additional load on the processor.

New features that consume more resources

From Phone Islam website: The smartphone screen displays iOS 26 with app icons and widgets; large text "iOS 26" appears over the device, displaying the iOS 26 update and the latest iOS features guide.

iOS 26 brings new features, some of which require more power to operate. For example, AI-based features, such as Adaptive Power, or new graphical user interface enhancements like Liquid Glass may use additional device resources. Initially, as you use and test these new features, you may notice a slight decrease in performance or battery life.

Is this normal? Yes, according to Apple.

In a new support document, Apple explained in more detail that this behavior is completely normal. It stated that hardware and software are designed together to deliver excellent performance and battery life, but as new features are added, the way we use our devices may change. Apple emphasized that it is constantly working to improve these features in subsequent updates to ensure excellent battery life and a seamless user experience.

This move by Apple, by providing a detailed support document and linking it to the release notes, demonstrates its commitment to clarifying matters for its users and reducing the anxiety they experience after each update.

How can you improve iPhone battery performance after updating?

From Phone Islam: A hand holding a smartphone displays a battery icon, with graphics of battery levels and the text "Save your battery!" above, highlighting the iPhone's battery drain after Apple's iOS 26 update.

While you wait for your device to complete the indexing and reorganization processes, there are some steps you can take to help improve battery performance:

be patient: The golden rule is to wait. Give your device a few days after the update. Battery performance typically stabilizes 24 to 48 hours after the update, once all background processes are complete.

Update applicationsMake sure all your apps are updated to their latest versions. App developers often release updates to improve compatibility with new operating systems and enhance performance.

Monitor battery consumption: Go to Settings > Battery to see which apps are consuming the most power. If you find an app that's consuming an unusually high amount of power, you can disable or reinstall it.

Enable low power modeIf you need to conserve battery charge, you can enable Low Power Mode from Settings > Battery.

Stop background app refresh: This feature can consume a lot of power. You can restrict or disable it completely in Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

Restart the iPhoneA simple restart can help resolve some temporary issues.

Updates are important for your device's performance.

From Phone Islam: An iPhone screen shows the iOS 26 Beta update with a large “26” icon and a red arrow pointing to “Update Now!” on a light blue background, highlighting Apple’s iOS 26 update and iPhone drain concerns.

Ultimately, while temporary battery issues can be annoying, updating your device to the latest version of iOS is crucial. Updates not only offer new features, but also contain security improvements and bug fixes that can impact long-term performance. Understanding the cause of temporary battery drain after an update gives you peace of mind and reassures you that it's just a simple transitional phase before your device stabilizes and returns to the usual performance you expect from your iPhone.

Apple is reliable and always works for the better. I install any update that is released and I have rarely encountered any problems. As I expect, Apple addresses this. I respect them all.

Will the battery level drop after the update return to its pre-update level? Before the update: 98%
After update: 95%.
Will the battery level go up to 98% again?

We've said this over a hundred times, the battery quality rating doesn't change until you do a system update, meaning your 95% rating will stay with you forever if you don't update.
This number may be lower now, less than 95%, and will adjust after the update. So, before the update, it wasn't actually 98%, but lower. The point is that Apple doesn't update it.
    I hope this is clear.

I updated to the latest version, all the apps are fine 👌 They work well except for the weather app 😢 It broke and won't open. I deleted it and downloaded it again, same problem, it refuses to work. Will it be fixed with an upcoming minor update to the system or is it permanently broken with the new version of the system?

Indeed, with each new update, the device's temperature rises and the battery drains, but after a while it returns to normal.
