Leak: Selfie camera to be hidden under iPhone screen soon

Although there are already phones with under-display front cameras, such as the new phones from ZTE  The Samsung Fold 4 and others have also featured this technology, but reports suggest it's not yet fully mature. As is typical for Apple, they don't introduce new features or technologies until they are completely convincing and practical, and then they present them in a more professional manner. Recently, a Chinese leaker claimed that Apple will hide the front-facing camera under the screen in the 2027 iPhone, confirming previous reports that the 20th-anniversary iPhone will have a completely unobtrusive screen. This would be a continuation of Apple's approach to iPhones without ports, openings, or any other inconveniences. Learn more about this new leak.

From PhoneIslam: A hand holding a futuristic, transparent smartphone with app icons - reminiscent of the iPhone 2020 - before the text "2027" in bold on a gradient background.

The Digital Chat Station account explained on the platform Weibo Apple's development of under-display camera technology is on track for its planned adoption in 2027, one year after the expected debut of under-display Face ID technology in the iPhone 18 Pro.

As mentioned earlier, several Android phones already have under-display selfie cameras, but image quality is often compromised because the lens is behind layers of screen. Apple is believed to have refrained from adopting this technology for this reason, but reports indicate they have been working on their own solution for some time, which may debut in the foldable iPhone expected to be released next year.

According to a report published in April 2024, LG Innotek—a Korean supplier to Apple—is developing under-display cameras that leave no visible cutout when not in use. These systems utilize a multi-lens array with freeform optic technology, designed to reduce image distortion and improve brightness levels, compensating for the light loss that typically occurs when a camera is behind layers of screen.

It's unclear whether the technology LG Innotek is working on will be used in a foldable iPhone, but a recent report from JP Morgan suggests that Apple's first foldable phone will feature an under-display camera with an unprecedented 24-megapixel resolution. Since under-display cameras are typically limited to 4 or 8 megapixels, this suggests Apple has made a significant breakthrough in improving light transmission and image quality compared to previous designs.

Reports indicate that Apple is working on a radical redesign for the 20th-anniversary iPhone, potentially featuring a bezel-less screen that curves around the entire device. There are strong expectations that the company will skip the "iPhone 19" designation, as it did for the 10th anniversary in 2017 when it bypassed the "iPhone 9" and launched the iPhone X alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

What do you think of Apple's expected move to introduce a bezel-less screen and hide the front camera under the screen in the 20th anniversary phone? Do you see this as a real innovation that will change the user experience, or just a cosmetic improvement to the devices?

Do you think the iPhone will last five years with the iPhone 17 Pro Max design, or will Apple abandon it because it's a disaster? Or is the design still improveable? Will changing the colors and the type of aluminum save the iPhone from this design woes? It's strange that the iPhone Air and iPad Pro share the transparent iOS, but the iPhone 17 Pro Max's edges look thick like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which was beautiful. It came with a design that could last five years with improvements, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max complemented it, was elegant, and suited the transparent software. I studied the design; it's not improveable and will only last two years. I think Apple will replace Tim Cook because time is moving faster than Apple, and this is the first time Tim Cook has made a mistake in such a difficult time. He achieved a major breakthrough with the M1 processors, changing the computer forever and preparing it for artificial intelligence. I liked the transparent iOS, but the iPhone 17 Pro Max design is outdated, more suited to 2010.

My question to the writer is: What technologies did Apple introduce late but in a more professional manner? And what technologies did they introduce late and in a way that had problems? And what percentage made you conclude that Apple's habit is to introduce technology in a more professional manner?

The technologies Apple introduced were late, but with high professionalism.
Face ID (2017): Not the first to use facial recognition, but delivered it reliably, quickly and securely using the TrueDepth 3D system.
Apple Watch (2015): It entered the smartwatch market late, after Android Wear, but it was Apple that actually made the idea a "commercial success," thanks to its focus on health and fitness.
Apple Silicon (M1 – 2020): After years of relying on Intel, it introduced its own processors late, but blew the market with performance versus power consumption.
Dynamic Island: Android preceded it with the idea of the interactive hole or notch, but Apple turned it into a smart interface experience.
ProMotion: The variable refresh rate (120Hz) came late, but it is seamlessly integrated into the system.
