After a five-year wait, Apple finally unveiled the new AirTag yesterday. Visually, the AirTag 2 will look identical to the original AirTag, and its functionality is similar, but there are a few differences worth noting.
Device Air Tag It helps users track and find their most important items using a location-tracking app — and now comes with a wider range of its find-it feature and a louder speaker.

Since the launch of AirTag in 2021, users from around the world have shared stories of recovering their lost luggage, keys, bikes, bags, and more.
Improved range and enhanced findability

Thanks to Apple’s second-generation ultra-wideband chip in the new AirTag—the same chip found in the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11—finding things is easier than ever. Precise Finding guides users to their lost items using sound, haptic feedback, and visual cues, enabling them to locate them from up to 50% farther away than the previous generation. And with an improved Bluetooth chip, you can pinpoint your location from even further away. For the first time, users can find their AirTag using Precise Finding on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, bringing a powerful experience right to your wrist.

With its updated internal design, the new AirTag delivers a sound that's 50% louder than the previous generation, allowing users to hear its location from up to twice the range. Featuring enhanced precision finder capabilities and a new, distinctive ring, AirTag makes it easier than ever to locate important items, whether it's keys hidden among sofa cushions or a wallet when you're out and about.
Location tracking network and the "Share Target Location" feature

The new AirTag integrates with the "Share Object Location" feature in iOS, which helps users locate lost items by temporarily and securely sharing the location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to support the retrieval of delayed baggage or lost items. Apple has partnered directly with more than 50 airlines to accept "Share Object Location" links.

Thanks to the “Share Item Location” feature, users can share the location of a lost item with the customer service team of a participating airline to help retrieve it. According to SITA A leading provider of IT solutions for airlines, Apple reported that using the "Object Location Sharing" feature resulted in a 26% reduction in baggage delays and a 90% reduction in lost or unrecovered baggage. Access is restricted to authorized individuals only, through a secure Apple account or authentication via a partner. Location sharing stops as soon as the user retrieves their belongings, and the device owner can disable sharing at any time. After seven days, sharing automatically stops.
industry-leading features

The new AirTag was designed from the ground up to keep location data private and secure. AirTag doesn't store any location data or records on the device, and end-to-end encryption ensures that all communications with the location network are protected, guaranteeing that only the device owner can access their location data. No third party, including Apple, knows the identity or location of any device it has helped locate. Designed to track objects only, not people or pets, the new AirTag offers industry-leading protection against unwanted tracking, with cross-platform alerts and constantly updated, unique Bluetooth identifiers.
