iPhone Fold: Will Apple bring back fingerprint recognition in its upcoming foldable phone?

Apple has long been watching the foldable phone market from afar, as if preparing for a technological coup that will make us forget everything we've seen before. We're not talking about just any phone that folds, but the "iPhone Fold" (or whatever name Apple chooses at the last minute), a device that promises to redefine how we interact with mobile technology. Imagine a device that combines the elegance and compact size of the iPhone you love with the creative space of the iPad Mini, all in your pocket without feeling like you're carrying a brick!

From the PhoneIslam website: Two smartphones are being displayed: one with a classic design and a single rear camera, while the other is two iPhone Fold smartphones with a partially open screen displaying app icons.

A design that redefines the concept of the screen

Leaks suggest that Apple isn't playing games here; it aims to deliver an innovative screen that seamlessly transitions from the size of a traditional phone to the interface of a fully-fledged tablet. When folded, the device will resemble a classic iPhone with its familiar design, but once unfolded, it reveals a screen comparable in size to an iPad Mini, making it ideal for multitasking, immersive video viewing, or even completing office tasks on the go.

From PhoneIslam: The foldable smartphone “iFold” displays the iOS home screen with app icons, weather and calendar widgets, and photos on a dark background when its screen is unfolded.

Interestingly, Apple is heavily focused on solving the current "key issue" of foldable phones: the annoying crease in the middle of the screen. Reports confirm that Cupertino engineers are working on advanced materials and engineering techniques to minimize this crease, ensuring a seamless and uninterrupted viewing experience. Apple, as always, prioritizes aesthetics as much as functionality and will settle for nothing less than perfection in its first foldable screen.

Gear surprise: Touch ID returns via the side door

Here's the surprise that might make some smile and others wonder: leaks suggest that Apple may abandon Face ID in this model in favor of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor integrated into the side power button. Why? Because accessing a side-mounted sensor is easier and more practical when the device is folded, and it also frees up valuable screen space, which will feature a punch-hole selfie camera for the first time in the company's history, thus increasing the actual display area.

From PhoneIslam: A hand holding an iPhone fold bearing the Apple logo, open flat on a stone surface outdoors, against an indistinct garden background.

Apple doesn't stop there; it places a strong emphasis on durability. The hinge will be an engineering marvel, designed to withstand years of heavy use, addressing the biggest concern of foldable phone users: fragility. Apple wants its device to be robust enough to withstand the rigors of daily use, not just a display piece of technology.

Hybrid operating system and multitasking power

To transform this powerful hardware into a true productivity tool, the iPhone Fold is expected to run on a hybrid operating system that combines the best features of iOS and iPadOS. This means you'll get features like split-screen and large app layouts similar to those found on iPads, but on your phone. You'll be able to run multiple apps simultaneously, turning the device into a powerful work tool that surpasses the capabilities of traditional smartphones.

Apple is also working to provide developers with the tools they need to optimize their apps for this new type of screen, to ensure that from the moment of launch, you will find apps that truly take advantage of every pixel on the big screen, whether you are editing documents, running your video meetings, or even playing your favorite games with an unparalleled experience.

Price and location in the market

Now, prepare to take a deep breath before we talk about the price. The iPhone Fold is expected to start at around $2000, making it the most expensive iPhone the company has ever released. This price reflects the device's nature as a "hybrid" product, eliminating the need to buy a separate phone and tablet, and targeting professionals and tech enthusiasts seeking the latest in human innovation.

Ultimately, the iPhone Fold represents a bold move by Apple to enter the foldable phone market, focusing on solving the problems that have plagued its competitors. If these leaks are accurate, we're looking at a device that will not only change the iPhone's design but will also change the way we look at smartphones forever. Are you ready to sacrifice Face ID for a giant screen and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor?

What do you think about the return of fingerprint recognition in the foldable iPhone, and do you see it as more practical than facial recognition in this design?

I don't see fingerprinting as practical, because if the hands are wearing gloves, how can the fingerprint work?

That's a logical point, but don't you think Face ID faces similar challenges when we wear masks or are in difficult lighting conditions? Side fingerprinting might be a quick secondary option, but not necessarily a complete replacement.

The world of iOS and technology

Is it called iPhone Volt or iPhone Fold?
Another question is what features the device will benefit from when iOS 27 is officially released?
For all supported devices

The exact name is “iPhone Fold” (meaning foldable), and as for iOS 27, we are still waiting for much older versions; therefore, talking about the features of an operating system that has not yet been announced is just speculation that is not based on any technical basis at the moment.

There's a laptop with a touchscreen and a regular keyboard... I didn't like it and didn't consider using it because laptops have one use and iPads have a different use. The same logic applies to the Fold devices: why pay for three devices in one when I can have an iPhone for daily tasks, an iPad for light daily tasks, and a MacBook for office work? I think Apple won't release this device; it's just rumors because I expect the company's management doesn't think it will sell well, and more importantly, that it will be used as intended.

I completely agree with you that hybrid devices often lack focus, but Apple has previously proven its ability to turn a rejected idea into an industry standard. You might think it's just a rumor, but history shows that Apple doesn't enter a new market unless it has the "secret formula" that makes us wonder how we ever lived without it!

I looked at the foldable Samsung phone and I didn't find any crease in the middle of the screen when unfolded? Do you see something I didn't see?!
