Is your iPhone storage full? Your comprehensive guide to freeing up storage space on iOS.

Nothing ruins the enjoyment of using your iPhone quite like that annoying message that suddenly pops up telling you that your iPhone storage is almost full. Suddenly, you can't take a quick photo, update your favorite apps, or even download a file you need for work. In this guide, we'll take you on a smart tour to revitalize your device's storage and get rid of unnecessary files without losing your important data.

First step: Knowing where the space goes

Before you start deleting anything, you first need to identify the real culprit behind the storage consumption. iOS provides a detailed and easy-to-understand overview that shows you exactly where every gigabyte of your device's storage is going.

From PhoneIslam: Three screenshots of the iPhone show: total storage used, recommendations for free space, and a list of apps by storage usage including Snapchat, Photos, and Instagram.

Go to Settings > General > iPhone storage spaceHere, you'll see a colored bar showing the space divided between photos, apps, system files, and system data. Wait a few seconds while the system analyzes the space and displays smart recommendations tailored to your device to intelligently begin the cleanup process, targeting the largest files first. This video explains how to free up 7GB of storage space with one click:

Offload Unused Apps

We all suffer from the syndrome of downloading apps "to try later" and then completely forgetting about them, leaving them to eat up storage space unnecessarily. iOS offers a brilliant feature called "Uninstall Unused Apps." This feature deletes the app itself to free up space, but it retains all your data, files, and progress logs within the app.

From PhoneIslam: Three screenshots show the details of Snapchat's storage on the iPhone: total iPhone storage, app usage, app size breakdown, and a prompt to uninstall the app while keeping its data.

When this feature is enabled, the app icon will remain on your home screen next to a small cloud icon. When you need to use it again, simply tap the icon to reload it and resume your work exactly where you left off, without any data loss—a truly magical way to instantly save space.

Optimize photo and video storage space

High-resolution photos and videos are the biggest enemy of storage space, especially with modern iPhone cameras that capture incredibly detailed images. To solve this problem without sacrificing your precious memories, you can activate the "Optimize iPhone Storage" option.

From PhoneIslam: The iPhone Photos app's Albums tab displays categories such as Videos, Selfies, Live Photos, Portraits, Panoramas, and Utilities including Imports, Duplicates, Hidden, and Recently Deleted to help manage iPhone storage efficiently.

By going to Settings > Pictures By enabling this option, iOS will save the original, full-resolution versions to your iCloud account, while keeping smaller, much more space-saving versions on your device. When you open any image, the full version will automatically download within seconds, allowing you to enjoy its complete quality.

Clear the cache and delete large attachments

Temporary files accumulate over time, consuming invisible space that may surprise you with its size. One quick and effective solution is to clear the Safari browser cache by going to Settings > safari > Clear history and location data.

From PhoneIslam: A screenshot of the iPhone storage screen by different apps showing iPhone storage details by different apps iOS version 17.4.1 and system data.

Similarly, attachments sent via the Messages app, such as videos and GIFs, consume a significant amount of storage space without your knowledge. You can review and delete them directly from the "iPhone Storage" page under the "Review Large Attachments" section to get rid of old files that have accumulated over the years and are no longer needed.

When we go to Settings > General > Storage, at the bottom of the list there is iOS storage and also System Data.
With continued use and the addition of numerous applications, system data increases significantly, sometimes reaching 25 GB or more for some users. A solution to this increase is to go to the date and time settings and move the date forward by one year (e.g., from 2026 to 2027). Then exit the settings, return to them, and change the date to automatic, which will revert it back to 2026. Afterward, when checking the storage space, you'll see that the system data has been reduced to half or a quarter of its original size. The reduction in system data varies from phone to phone. I tried this method and my storage space decreased from 24 GB to 4 GB.

Interesting experiment, Ayad! This "trick" is known in the user community as forcing iOS to run maintenance processes that delete old temporary files, but it's not an official solution and can sometimes affect Calendar or two-factor authentication (2FA) apps, so caution is advised when using it. Did you notice any syncing or app issues after doing this?

The best way is to convert iPhone screenshots from PNG format to another format such as HEIF, which reduces the file size by more than 10x.
