With Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 fast approaching on June 8th, all eyes are on the new operating systems the company will unveil. Among these, Apple Watch enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting watchOS 27, which promises a host of improvements and new features. While the primary focus this year may be on stability and performance, leaks reveal some exciting additions that will make your smartwatch even smarter and more powerful.

Improved heart rate tracking
According to a report by renowned journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, watchOS 27 will include significant improvements to the heart rate tracking feature. While the report didn't delve into the precise details of how these improvements will work, Apple is expected to introduce more accurate algorithms for monitoring physical activity and daily rest, giving users a deeper analysis of their athletic and daily health data.

This move comes at a time of increasing competition with rival health devices such as the Oura ring and Whoop bracelet, pushing Apple to strengthen its leadership in the field of physical health through its smartwatch.
New Modular watch face for everyone
One of the most intriguing rumors is that Apple intends to introduce a new watch face based on the popular "Modular Ultra" design, currently exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra. This new face would be a simplified version, allowing users of regular Apple Watches, such as the Apple Watch Series 11, to enjoy a rich interface with elegantly and practically arranged complications without needing the larger Ultra version.

This move will undoubtedly please millions of users who prefer the classic and elegant design of the basic series, but at the same time are eager to take advantage of the professional and practical display interfaces that characterize the Ultra models.
More Apple Intelligence capabilities
In the current watchOS 26, Apple's AI features available on the watch when paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later are limited to a few features such as Workout Buddy, real-time message translation, and notification summaries. With Apple promising significant AI advancements at WWDC 2026, it's almost certain that watchOS 27 will offer a substantial share of these smart capabilities, powered by the intelligence of the paired phone.

Whether it’s by improving interaction with the smart assistant Siri to be faster and more context-aware, or by providing personalized sports and health analytics based on your daily behavior, the future holds a real breakthrough in the way you interact with your watch.
Expanding satellite communication features
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 features built-in satellite connectivity, enabling users to send emergency messages and share their location via GPS and Messages even without an iPhone nearby. With rumors suggesting that the upcoming iOS 27 operating system will include up to five new satellite features, two of these are expected to be carried over to watchOS 27: Apple Maps via satellite and the ability to send photos in Messages via satellite.

Amazon recently announced its plans to acquire Globalstar, Apple's satellite service provider, signing an agreement to ensure the continuity and development of satellite communication features for current and future Apple devices, guaranteeing a promising future for these vital technologies.
Focus on stability and performance first
Mark Gurman also noted that Apple is heavily focused on “stability, performance, and minor improvements” in watchOS 27, rather than introducing revolutionary features that could disrupt the system's smooth operation. This means the update will concentrate on patching vulnerabilities, fixing annoying bugs, and improving power consumption and battery life.

The first developer beta is expected to be released immediately after the conference on June 8, followed by the public beta in July, with the system being officially launched to all users in September, coinciding with the unveiling of the new generation of watches.
