Apple's cloud is no longer just a storage space for backups and vacation photos; in iOS 27, it has become the driving force behind many smart features. With the release of the beta versions of the highly anticipated system, Apple unveiled a wide range of enhancements to iCloud, deeply integrating Apple Intelligence technologies into everyday services, from home monitoring to managing photos and passwords.
Artificial intelligence for home security cameras via iCloud+
Apple Home and HomeKit's Secure Video feature have received a major AI-powered upgrade for iCloud Plus subscribers. Instead of receiving generic notifications about movement in front of the camera, the system will now analyze the scene and send detailed text summaries directly within the notifications, such as detecting a person walking by or a pet.
Apple didn't stop there; it added text descriptions directly to the timeline of video recordings, allowing you to easily search for specific events. Even better is the ability to link events between different cameras. If someone moves from the living room to the hallway, the system will stitch together footage from both cameras to provide a comprehensive view of the movement within the home. These smart features require a 2TB iCloud+ subscription, a home center such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K, and an AI-enabled iPhone like the iPhone 15 Pro or later. The cameras also now support 4K video recording for the first time.
Lifting restrictions on AI use for iCloud+ subscribers
At its developer conference, Apple explained that some generative AI features, such as image creation via the Image Playground app, would have daily usage limits to avoid overloading servers. This is where the paid subscription comes in; iCloud+ subscribers get these daily limits lifted, allowing them to generate more images and use AI tools more extensively without being restricted by the free limit set for everyone.
This move is a clear indication of Apple's intention to link the computing power of the cloud to the value of paid subscriptions, with the available limits varying according to your iCloud Plus subscription category.
Siri conversation syncing and major upgrades to the Photos app
Siri now relies entirely on iCloud to sync your entire conversation history across your Apple devices. You can now start a conversation with Siri on your iPhone and then continue the same conversation on your iPad or Mac, with the ability to pin important conversations and access them at any time.
In the Photos app, Apple introduced a Priority Syncing option that forces the device to immediately upload all photos to iCloud for 24 hours, regardless of battery level. Additionally, initial upload speeds have been significantly improved, and Android and Windows users can now upload photos directly to shared albums while maintaining full file resolution without compression.
Improvements to sharing, passwords, and the notes app
The updates also included collaborative sharing links via iCloud, which now feature richer, more detailed previews to clarify the content before opening it, along with the addition of a system for sending access requests for shared files and faster data loading via iCloud.com.
In the Passwords app, iCloud Keychain now works with AI and Safari to automatically correct weak passwords and replace them with strong, secure ones. Finally, the Journal app has added a clear indicator showing the status of each journal entry syncing with the cloud, ensuring your thoughts are safely stored.
