It seems Google finally woke up and decided to stop forcing Mac users to open Chrome every time they want to chat with its artificial intelligence “Gemini”. While fans of OpenAI and Anthropic enjoy the native and comfortable ChatGPT and Claude apps on Mac, Google enthusiasts have had to settle for the modest web version. However, according to the latest reports, this situation is about to change completely as Google steps into the competition arena with a macOS‑specific app.
Fierce competition and an early beta
A new Bloomberg report says Google has already begun testing an early version of the Gemini app for Mac with a group of testers. The goal is clear and explicit: to close the gap with competitors that have already taken steps toward delivering a fully integrated user experience. The app is currently in its early stages and contains only the “core features”, meaning Google is still cooking the most exciting features behind closed doors before a public launch.
The initial design of the app closely resembles what we see in iPhone and iPad versions, which makes sense for unifying the user experience across Apple platforms. However, the real power lies in how this app interacts with macOS itself, not just as a pretty chat interface. It appears Google wants to make access to its artificial intelligence easier than ever with a single keystroke on your keyboard.
Surface-level intelligence… no, “Desktop Intelligence”!
The most exciting feature being tested is called “Desktop Intelligence”. This feature will allow Gemini to “see” what you see on the Mac screen. Yes, it sounds a bit scary for your privacy, but it is extremely useful from a productivity standpoint! By reading the screen context, the AI can pull data from other apps directly, summarize what you are reading, or help you accomplish complex tasks based on what is currently displayed.
In addition, the app will be able to perform web searches, analyze uploaded documents, and keep a full conversation history. Google also asks testers to try comprehensive content‑generation tools, ranging from images and tables to video and music, and even provide feedback on mathematical problems and information analysis. It seems Google wants Gemini to be your constant companion on every pixel of the Mac screen.
Exciting integration with macOS 27
This move comes at a very critical time, as Apple prepares to launch iOS 27 and macOS 27, both of which will carry massively expanded “Apple Intelligence” features. Interestingly, Apple has already collaborated with Google to make Siri use Gemini models for some complex tasks. This means we will see Google intelligence in two places: as a full‑featured standalone app, and as an integrated component within Siri to improve its responses.
