It seems Google has finally woken up and decided to stop forcing Mac users to open the Chrome browser every time they want to chat with its AI, “Gemini.” While fans of OpenAI and Anthropic have been enjoying the convenient, native ChatGPT and Claude apps on their Macs, Google enthusiasts have had to settle for a modest web version. However, according to the latest reports, this situation is about to change completely as Google enters the arena with a dedicated app for macOS.

Fierce Competition and an Early Beta
A new report from Bloomberg states that Google has already begun testing an early version of the Gemini app for Mac with a group of testers. The goal is clear and direct: to close the gap with competitors who have already taken steps to provide a seamless user experience. The app is currently in its early stages and contains only “core features,” meaning Google is still cooking up the most exciting features behind closed doors before the public launch.
The initial design of the app is very similar to what we see in the iPhone and iPad versions, which makes sense to unify the user experience across Apple’s various platforms. However, the real power lies in how this app interacts with the macOS system itself, rather than just being a pretty chat interface. It seems Google wants to make accessing its AI easier than ever with a single keystroke on your keyboard.
Desktop Intelligence
The most exciting feature being tested is called “Desktop Intelligence.” This feature will allow Gemini to “see” what you see on your Mac screen. Yes, it sounds a bit scary for your privacy, but it is very useful for productivity! By reading the screen context, the AI can pull data directly from other applications, summarize what you are reading, or help you complete complex tasks based on what is currently displayed in front of you.
Additionally, the app will be able to perform web searches, analyze uploaded documents, and maintain a full history of conversations. Google is also asking testers to try out comprehensive content generation tools, ranging from images and tables to video and music, and even provide feedback on math problems and information analysis. It seems Google wants to make Gemini your constant companion on every pixel of your Mac screen.
Exciting Integration with macOS 27

This move comes at a very sensitive time, as Apple prepares to launch iOS 27 and macOS 27, which will feature massively upgraded “Apple Intelligence” capabilities. Interestingly, Apple has already collaborated with Google to allow Siri to use Gemini models for certain complex tasks. This means we will see Google’s AI in two places: as a standalone, full-featured app, and as an integrated part of Siri to improve its responses.
