Apple plans to introduce ads in the Maps app to boost services revenue

It seems that Apple has decided that “free services” are no longer enough to satisfy its growing financial ambitions. After years of being accustomed to the clean, distraction‑free interface of the Maps app (Apple Maps), the latest reports indicate that the company is preparing to open the doors to advertising within the app. Yes, my friend, soon you might search for “coffee” and see Starbucks appear at the top of the results because it paid Apple more than others, not necessarily because it’s the closest to you.

How will ads work in Apple Maps?

According to a Bloomberg report, ads in Apple Maps will be very similar to what we have seen in Google Maps for years. The idea simply relies on a bidding system; brands, retailers, and restaurants can pay to have their names appear at the top of search results when certain keywords are used.

For example, if a user searches for the word “restaurant,” the restaurant that submitted the highest bid for that keyword will appear prominently in the top spot. And don’t think this is limited to your phone only; Apple plans to roll out these ads across its apps on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even the web version, to ensure they reach as many users as possible.

Why this push toward ads now?

The reason behind this move is not mysterious; it’s “money.” Apple aims to significantly increase services‑sector revenue to offset any potential shortfall in other areas. Regulatory pressures and new laws could force Apple to lower the commissions it earns from the App Store, especially in massive markets like China, in addition to the possibility that its multibillion‑dollar search deals with Google could be affected by ongoing regulatory issues.

From Phonegram: a man looks through a giant smartphone displaying various app icons, while towering buildings reflect the words “APPLE AD.” and city lights show a world of advertising and “iPad” in the background.

For this reason, Apple renamed its advertising business last year from “Search Ads” to “Apple Ads,” a clear signal of its intent to expand ads into every corner of its ecosystem. We have already begun to see this in the increased number of ad slots in the App Store, and now Maps is the next platform in this massive investment plan.

Do you think the presence of ads will spoil the Apple Maps experience that has always been characterized by simplicity and calm?
