The latest reports and leaks indicate that the company is secretly working on two new AirPods models bearing the codes B798 and B790, opening the door to a completely new vision of how we interact with artificial intelligence and the world around us through wearable devices.
The story of cameras in AirPods: From a futuristic vision to a concrete plan
Rumors about Apple adding cameras inside AirPods date back quite a while, as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and journalist Mark Gurman previously indicated that the company is considering integrating infrared cameras into the headphones. Initially, it was believed that these cameras were primarily intended to facilitate gesture control for the Vision Pro headset, but this idea seemed too limited given the massive sales volume of AirPods compared to the headset’s audience.
With Apple’s strong push toward developing Visual Intelligence features, the picture has become clearer; the company aspires to enable headphones to analyze the surrounding environment in collaboration with the iPhone and upcoming smart glasses. According to leaks regarding the B798 code, this advanced model equipped with cameras may not see the light of day before late 2027, to be part of a major launch coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the first iPhone.
Model B790: A faster option or a new generation of AirPods?
On the other hand, Mark Gurman revealed the existence of another competing model within Apple’s corridors under the code B790. What is interesting is that this device is already in the company’s internal roadmap, and references to it have appeared in iOS system codes, which suggests the possibility of it being unveiled much sooner than we expect.
Speculations abound about what the B790 is; it might be a simplified version of the camera project with less complex sensing mechanisms for gesture control, or it might represent the fifth generation of standard AirPods. Although Apple’s headphone update cycle usually ranges between two and three years, the rapid development in artificial intelligence technologies may push the company to accelerate the launch pace.
