Is your phone on the blacklist? iOS 27 says goodbye to popular iPhone models

With every major iOS update, we eagerly await new features, but at the same time, we hold our breath, wondering: will our iPhone survive? As the date for iOS 27 approaches, it seems the time has come to say goodbye to some of the models we have loved. Apple, as usual, is pushing the wheels of progress forward, which means some devices will not be able to keep up with the high technical requirements of artificial intelligence and the advanced features to come. Are you ready for this confrontation?

Important dates for iOS 27

Apple has outlined the roadmap for its upcoming system, with the first beta version expected to be announced on June 8, 2026, during the WWDC developer conference. This will be followed by the public beta in late June, leading up to the final, stable release in mid-September 2026, coinciding with the launch of new iPhones.

These dates give users enough time to get their affairs in order, especially those who own devices whose software journey is nearing its end. Planning ahead is the secret to a smooth transition, and it is always better to know the fate of your device before you find yourself left behind.

Devices that have left the update train

Every journey has an end, and it seems the iPhone 11 journey has reached its final station. Apple has decided to discontinue support for the entire iPhone 11 series (the standard, Pro, and Pro Max versions), in addition to the second-generation iPhone SE released in 2020. This means these users will not receive new features or future security updates.

Although your device will continue to function, the absence of updates may make it vulnerable to security loopholes over time, not to mention the loss of compatibility with modern apps and services that require the latest operating systems. It is a difficult farewell to models that provided amazing performance for years.

The lucky list: Supported devices

From Phonegram: Four iPhone models standing under the iOS 27 update logo, with a list showing the iPhone 12 series devices supported for the update and a note about advanced features requiring newer processors.

Now, the iPhone 12 has become the “minimum requirement” to stay in the world of iOS 27. The supported list includes:

  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max

However, don’t get too excited if you own an iPhone 12; Apple indicates that some advanced features, especially those relying on complex machine learning algorithms or augmented reality, may require newer processors to run efficiently. Support here means running the system, not necessarily running all its luxuries.

Why does Apple end support for older devices?

It is not just a desire to push you to buy a new phone (although this is an attractive goal for shareholders), but it is about the device’s horsepower. iPhone 11 processors are no longer capable of processing the modern artificial intelligence technologies that Apple is now adopting. Classifying the iPhone 11 Pro as a “vintage” device is a clear signal that Apple is directing its development resources toward newer technologies.

From Phonegram: Five iPhones in different colors are displayed in a row with a 'Vintage' sticker above them on a light gray gradient background, subtly hinting at the design inspiration behind the iOS 27 update.

This approach allows Apple to provide a smoother and more secure user experience, without having to slow down the system to accommodate old hardware that can no longer keep up with today’s massive software requirements.

Do you think Apple is right to stop support for the iPhone 11, or is it still capable of delivering?
