The Shortcuts app creates shortcuts for you

Have you ever tried to create a complex “shortcut” on your iPhone and suddenly felt like you needed a degree in computer science and programming to understand what’s going on? Well, it seems Apple is fully aware of this struggle. Instead of spending hours dragging and dropping code commands that may or may not work, Apple plans to have artificial intelligence do this difficult task for you in the upcoming iOS 27, making the app smarter and easier to use than ever before.

When AI becomes the programmer

According to software data recently discovered in the backend code of iOS, the company is working on an entirely new feature for the Shortcuts app that will allow users to generate unique, custom actions using Apple Intelligence. The idea here is not just to integrate AI tools into the shortcut as we currently see, but to have the AI build the shortcut and its programmatic structure from scratch based on your request.

The Shortcuts app, which Apple acquired from the Workflow app in 2017, has always been a tool for professionals and tech enthusiasts who love to automate everything in their lives—making things work automatically, from controlling smart home devices to sending automated messages. But for the average user, it can seem as complex as Morse code. With this new direction, Apple wants to give the app “mass appeal” by enabling anyone to create complex tasks just by describing them in words.

Siri and the future

In iOS 26, Apple already began integrating “Apple Intelligence” support into the app, but the upcoming version in iOS 27 will take it to a whole new level. You will be able to issue voice commands in simple natural language, and the system will translate them into effective programmatic steps. This means you won’t need to search for “how to connect the Photos app to the Mail app”; you will just say what you want, and the iPhone will do the rest.

This smart generator is expected to be an integral part of the upgraded version of Siri, which is anticipated to transform into a true chatbot in iOS 27. Siri will not only answer your questions but will also understand context and interact with apps deeply, making building shortcuts just the beginning of what your personal assistant can do in the near future.

Do you think AI will finally end users’ intimidation with the Shortcuts app and make it a tool for everyone?
