At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro might look like a carbon copy of the previous generation, the iPhone 17 Pro, but this external similarity hides many changes Apple has made under the hood. Beyond the new camera and longer battery life, the new iPhone carries a set of improvements that didn’t receive as much attention during the event, but they could significantly impact the daily user experience. Let’s take a quick look at the most important features of the iPhone 18 Pro that you might have missed during Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event.
Greater Control Over the Camera Aperture
The main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro comes with a variable aperture that gives the user greater control over light intake and depth of field. The aperture can be adjusted by choosing one of four settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.
When selecting f/1.48, the aperture is wider, allowing more light in and helping to capture better photos in low-light conditions, with more background blur.
As for f/1.8 and f/2.8, they offer a suitable balance between lighting and detail clarity in most shooting conditions.
Meanwhile, selecting f/4 narrows the aperture to keep more of the scene in focus, which makes it useful when photographing groups of people, especially when some are in the background. This system relies on six laser-cut blades, each no thicker than a human hair.
It is worth noting that the user does not need to adjust the variable aperture every time. The iPhone can select it automatically. For professionals, Apple allows manual control of the aperture via the Camera app, along with adjusting shutter speed and ISO sensitivity.
Cinematic Effect After Shooting
The Cinematic mode has received a significant upgrade four years after its debut. On the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, you no longer have to decide if you want to use the Cinematic effect before you start recording, as you can apply it to the video after it has been captured. Cinematic shooting is now available in 4K at up to 60 frames per second. In Time-Lapse mode, the iPhone camera can record 4K videos in Dolby Vision HDR format.
C2 Modem and Faster Connectivity
Apple relies on its own connectivity chips in the new generation, including the N1 chip for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread technology (a wireless communication technology based on the Internet Protocol that allows smart home devices to communicate with each other).
This is in addition to the C2 cellular modem. Apple says the new modem provides 50% faster download speeds compared to the C1X chip, with 15% lower power consumption. The C2 also supports mmWave technology (in the United States), a step that represents further progress in Apple’s reliance on its own technologies instead of Qualcomm modems. Artificial intelligence technologies, in collaboration with the A20 Pro chip, help speed up network reconnection in areas with weak coverage.
Note: The iPhone 18 Pro Max still uses a Qualcomm modem.
Better Cooling for Smooth Performance
The A20 Pro chip uses TSMC’s most advanced 2nm manufacturing technology, but it doesn’t rely on that alone to improve efficiency. Apple has changed the way the chip is packaged, which allowed the memory to be moved away from the chip and connected the SoC system directly to the new vapor chamber.
The surface area of the vapor chamber in the iPhone 18 Pro is three times larger than the chamber in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says these changes combined increase sustained performance by 40% compared to the previous generation.
60W Wired Charging
Apple has increased the wired charging speed from 40W in the iPhone 17 Pro to 60W in the new generation, allowing the phone to charge from 0 to 50% in 15 minutes instead of the previous 20 minutes. To take advantage of this speed, the user needs a 60W USB-C charger that supports USB PD 3.1 and Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS).
Faster charging comes alongside improved battery life, as the iPhone 18 Pro is now capable of lasting as long as the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has received the largest increase in battery capacity and runtime in iPhone history to deliver exceptional performance.
A New Way to Verify Photo Authenticity
With the spread of AI tools capable of editing photos, Apple has introduced the Apple Reference Image feature to help the user know what the camera originally captured. The feature relies on the new main sensor in the iPhone 18 Pro to sign image data the moment it is captured. Afterward, Apple’s cloud computing technology uses this signed data to create an uneditable reference image. It can be viewed alongside the original photo within the Photos app to compare them and detect changes. Apple will also provide APIs that allow third-party apps to display these reference images.
Dynamic Island
Apple didn’t just shrink the size of the Dynamic Island to provide extra screen space; it redesigned it to be more useful. It can now display up to three live activities at the same time, such as tracking a food delivery order, running a timer, and monitoring a match score simultaneously. Despite the reduced space of the Dynamic Island, iPhone 18 models still support Face ID.
