iOS 27 leaks reveal an upcoming AI revolution for the Camera and Photos apps

It seems Apple is not ready to back down even an inch in the AI race! While we are still trying to grasp the current AI features, a massive leak from renowned journalist Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has revealed revolutionary features coming to the Camera and Photos apps in the highly anticipated iOS 27. Apple plans to integrate AI into the finest details of photography and photo editing to make the experience smoother and more powerful than ever, paving the way for a whole new generation of visual interaction with iPhone devices.

AI features in the Camera and Photos app in iOS 27

Siri gets a dedicated mode inside the Camera app

According to the report, the Camera app will get a dedicated “Siri mode” as a primary option alongside traditional shooting modes like Photo and Video. This feature will be a practical alternative to the current Visual Intelligence feature, allowing users to take pictures of objects and analyze them instantly via AI or through Google’s reverse image search engine.

The decision to integrate this feature directly into the Camera app instead of limiting it to the Camera Control button was not arbitrary; Apple aims to increase user interaction with visual AI and train them for upcoming future products such as smart glasses and AirPods equipped with cameras.

Flexible camera customization and stunning editing features

The update won’t stop at Siri; the Camera app will receive an entirely new panel called “Add Widgets.” This panel will allow users, especially professionals, to customize the top interface of the camera and replace default shortcuts with ones that suit their needs, such as depth controls, the self-timer, or faster activation of Night Mode.

As for the Photos app, it will get its share of Apple Intelligence magic through two new features:

  • Reframe feature: Allows users to intelligently change the perspective and framing of a photo after it has been taken.
  • Extend feature: Uses generative AI to complete missing parts of an image, such as amazingly generating the bottom half of a building that was cut off during shooting.

Furthermore, Apple is testing photo editing using natural language voice commands, allowing you to simply ask Siri: “Crop this photo” or “Adjust the colors and make it warmer,” although Gurman notes that this interactive voice feature might not be available in the first versions of iOS 27 but rather in subsequent updates.

AI spanning the entire system and the Shortcuts app

The major changes will not be limited to the camera; they will extend to the Shortcuts app, which will receive a comprehensive redesign allowing users to create complex automations based on simple voice commands. For example, you can tell your iPhone with a single phrase: “When I start driving home, play my favorite music playlist and send a message to my wife with my estimated time of arrival,” and the system will automatically program this shortcut without any complex manual steps.

Previous reports also point to additional accompanying features such as AI-designed wallpapers, a comprehensive system-wide spellchecker, and the development of the Image Playground app to generate higher-quality images and custom emojis (Genmoji) to enhance the user’s creative experience in every detail of the visual and written system.
