With all the ongoing buzz surrounding the anticipated foldable iPhone (iPhone Fold), it seemed as though the tech community had completely forgotten about the other slim and exciting member of the Apple family — the iPhone Air. However, a new report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has brought this ultra-thin phone back into the spotlight, confirming that its second generation is still on track and scheduled for release in the spring of 2027.

The Journey of Extreme Thinness and the Future of the iPhone Air

When Apple unveiled the iPhone Air with a thickness of just 5.6 mm, it was a very bold design move in the smartphone world. Because of this extreme thinness, many began to logically link this design to the long-awaited foldable phone; placing two iPhone Air devices face-to-face looks like a perfectly folded iPhone. However, this thinness raised some concerns that the phone might just be a temporary technical showcase, especially with Apple avoiding giving it a sequential number, which indicates its desire not to restrict it to the usual annual update cycle.
These leaks confirm Apple’s new strategy in segmenting its launches; it appears that the fall event will be reserved exclusively for professional users via the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, in addition to the new iPhone Fold. Conversely, consumer and budget phones like the iPhone 18e and the second-generation iPhone Air will be moved to the spring event, giving Apple an excellent opportunity to distribute its products in a balanced way throughout the year and meet the needs of different segments without distraction.
What to Expect from the “iPhone Air 2” in 2027?

According to Gurman’s latest report, the second generation of the iPhone Air, internally codenamed V62, will seek to address the most prominent user complaints regarding the current generation. The single rear camera and battery life are at the top of the list of requested improvements; Apple intends to equip the phone with a dual rear camera that includes an Ultra Wide lens, and a battery with better capacity to handle daily usage requirements.

To ensure no performance degradation due to the thin chassis, reports indicate that the phone will come equipped with an advanced cooling system based on a Vapor Chamber, in addition to the powerful A20 Pro processor, which is intended for the iPhone 18 Pro phones. Although the iPhone Air may remain a product aimed at a specific segment looking for distinction and luxury, John Ternus, the company’s incoming CEO, believes that such phones play a crucial role in highlighting the diversity and quality of Apple’s options and distinguishing them in the competitive market.
