Code reveals 5 new features in the iPhone 18 Pro camera

Apple is always keen to maintain strict secrecy regarding the hardware of its upcoming phones, but lines of code in its beta systems often have the final say in revealing what is happening behind closed doors. In the latest deep dive into the beta versions of the iOS 27 update, developers found compelling software evidence indicating Apple’s intention to introduce a major upgrade to the official camera app, including five professional features, most of which are centered around the upcoming hardware in the highly anticipated iPhone 18 Pro.

Cinematic exposure measurement tools: Histogram and Waveform

iPhone users have long relied on third-party apps like Halide to precisely adjust lighting levels, but Apple is finally preparing to integrate advanced exposure measurement tools directly into the stock camera app. The discovered code shows that the app will allow the display of an exposure graph, or what is known as a histogram, alongside wave charts known as Waveform to monitor the distribution of brightness and shadows in a scene with extreme precision.

The histogram provides a quick overview of the amount of data overexposed or buried in darkness, while the Waveform chart takes the experience a step further by matching lighting data with its actual location within the frame horizontally, giving the photographer superior ability to make the right decision before pressing the shutter button or recording cinematic video.


Full manual control and Focus Peaking

Manual focus control has always been a key requirement for photography enthusiasts, and now the code confirms that Apple is testing a dedicated tool to manually adjust and lock focus, mimicking what the company offers in the Final Cut Camera app. Strangely, the focus adjustment bar had appeared briefly in previous tests before being removed, but the code responsible for focus locking has become explicitly restricted to devices running iOS 27 or later, meaning it is limited to the iPhone 18 Pro and subsequent generations.

It doesn’t stop at manual adjustment; the code also revealed the addition of a focus peaking feature, a technology that places clear colored lines around the edges of elements that are precisely within the sharp focus range. In addition, the camera will provide instant warnings for overexposed areas via various visual overlays, including warning diagonal lines, checkerboard patterns, and blinking effects that alert the user to blown-out highlights in certain parts of the frame.


Variable aperture: The long-awaited mechanical leap

The most interesting feature in the leaks is the software processing of images based on the aperture width. The code data indicates that the system’s image processing engine is capable of dynamically adjusting lens corrections based on the actual aperture width, while performing a merging and calibration process between up to four different reference points to ensure smooth results and avoid any visual distortion.

This software development is directly linked to ongoing leaks confirming Apple’s intention to equip the main camera in the iPhone 18 Pro with a mechanically variable aperture. Having a physical aperture that expands and contracts allows the phone to truly control depth of field and natural bokeh, as well as improve image quality in difficult lighting and landscapes without relying entirely on artificial digital processing.


Sequential self-timer and new hardware exclusivity

The discoveries also included a small but very practical improvement: support for continuous shooting via the self-timer. Previously, the user had to wait for the shot to be saved and restart the timer from scratch to take another group photo, while the new system allows the countdown to start automatically again as soon as the first photo is taken, without waiting for the file processing and storage to finish, making it easier to capture multiple quick poses without touching the phone.

Although some of these purely software features could technically run on current generations, Apple’s linking of most of this code to new hardware, specifically the aperture correction mechanisms, confirms that the company intends to reserve the major features as the primary attraction for users to upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro, with the possibility of delaying some features for future minor updates.
