After more than seven years of rumors and false starts that never seemed to end, Apple has finally settled the debate and unveiled its first foldable iPhone in its signature, iconic style—waiting and waiting until the technology is fully mature, then surprising the entire world with a technical masterpiece that is far ahead of its competitors. Although leaks spoiled the surprise as usual and kept us waiting for the device’s arrival, Apple managed to impress everyone with some unexpected details, most notably the device’s name. While all speculation over the past months pointed to the name “iPhone Ultra,” the company surprised us by choosing a smarter and more elegant name: “iPhone Duo.” Let’s get to know this amazing iPhone in some detail.
A New Name and a Different Philosophy: Why “Duo” and Not “Ultra”?
Abandoning the “Ultra” moniker was the most logical step; that title has been exhausted by Samsung, and the new phone does not offer specs that exceed the limits of the universe, but rather its true value lies in its foldability and refined engineering solutions. In terms of raw hardware, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max remain the absolute powerhouses in the lineup, thanks to their triple-camera system with variable aperture for the main lens and massive batteries.
As for the iPhone Duo, its primary and fundamental advantage is that it is an iPhone that folds to give you a full tablet screen. This impressive engineering achievement puts users at a crossroads similar to what the iPhone Air model offered in the past; do you sacrifice some advanced features for a device with an exceptional and flexible design? The difference here is that the high price of the iPhone Duo might make the decision for many without hesitation.
Displays and Design: Engineering That Eliminated Annoying Creases
When Apple decided to enter the foldable device market, it did so with its usual weight and excessive attention to the finest details. The internal screen is almost completely free of the annoying crease line, with a unified aspect ratio between the external and internal screens, meaning that apps displayed on the outside will appear with the same shape and dimensions on the inside, but with a much wider viewing area without distorting the interfaces.
The external screen comes in at 5.4 inches, giving you about 90% of the viewing area of the iPhone 18 Pro. But once you open the device, a stunning 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR internal screen unfolds before you, which is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen! To complete this luxurious experience, Apple has added a matte nano-texture layer to reduce reflections, similar to its high-end MacBook and iPad Pro devices.
Both screens support 120Hz ProMotion technology, with the Always-On feature and outdoor brightness reaching up to 3000 nits. The iOS 27 system has also been innovatively adapted to facilitate one-handed control; the Dock and control tools have been moved to the right side of the screen, and the top status bar has been transformed into a compact status ring that saves space and reduces distraction.
For productivity and note-taking enthusiasts, the phone officially supports the standard Apple Pencil with a USB-C port, with this support to be officially activated via a subsequent software update to iOS 27 before the end of this year.
Cameras and Smart Software Photography Tricks
In a first for Apple devices, the internal FaceTime camera has been hidden completely under the screen to provide a clean viewing area, which means the absence of the Face ID system; instead, the device relies on Touch ID or unlocking via Apple Watch. The external screen is equipped with a front camera through a dedicated circular hole.
The phone carries two rear cameras with 48 megapixels: an Ultra Wide lens identical to the one found in the iPhone 18 Pro models, and an advanced Fusion main lens. The cameras leverage the image processor in the A20 Pro chip to offer the latest photography styles and advanced control over texture and grain, just like professional devices.
However, the true wow factor is evident in the software features that take advantage of the flexibility of the two screens; you can partially open the device and use the powerful rear camera to take selfies while previewing the scene directly on the external screen, in addition to the Duo Preview feature that allows people to see their poses while being photographed and adjust their stance before the photo is taken.
Apple also added a genius and fun feature called Kid Cue; the external screen displays cute animations of Snoopy and the Peanuts gang to grab children’s attention and make them smile and look directly at the lens while taking photos!
The innovations didn’t stop there; the device introduces the FaceTime Duo feature, which allows two people to participate together in one video call—one sitting in front of the external screen and the other in front of the internal screen without the need to crowd in front of a single screen. Finally, the Smart Take feature provides automatic capture of group photos as soon as those present take their positions in front of the camera, without the need to set a timer and run toward the group.
Long-Lasting Battery and Advanced Connectivity Technologies
The flexible hinge design on the iPhone Duo allows the use of StandBy mode anywhere, even without connecting the charger; the phone can be placed like a tent structure on the external screen, or partially folded on the internal screen to display the clock, weather, and photo albums with custom designs within the iOS 27 system.
As expected to achieve this extreme thinness, the traditional SIM card slot has been completely removed, with the phone working exclusively with eSIM technology in all global markets. This clever use of internal space has contributed to integrating two batteries that provide an amazing operating time of up to 31 hours of video playback on the large internal screen, and up to 44 hours when using only the external screen.
The device supports advanced charging speed that charges 50% of the battery capacity in just 20 minutes, or gives you five hours of video playback after a quick five-minute charge. The device also includes Apple’s all-new C2 modem chip, which offers unprecedented power efficiency with support for ultra-fast mmWave bands.
Pricing and Market Availability
The iPhone Duo is available in two attractive colors: Star White and Night Sky. Prices start at $1,999 for the 256GB capacity, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and go up to $3,199 for the 2TB capacity.
Pre-orders for the phone will begin on October 16, and it will officially arrive on store shelves on October 23 in 70 countries around the world in the first launch wave, to be followed by 28 other countries on October 30, where the device will reach users with the iOS 27.1 system version pre-installed.
