It seems Apple is no longer content with just catching up in the AI race; it has decided to take the lead in one of the areas iPhone users love most: the Photos app. According to the latest reports, we are in for massive updates in iOS 27 that will turn your phone into a “professional studio” at the touch of a button, as Apple aims to redefine our concept of photo editing using advanced generative AI tools.

The AI Trio: Extend, Enhance, and Reframe
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to completely restructure the photo editing experience. The idea is to group the new tools with the existing “Clean Up” feature under a new section called “Apple Intelligence Tools” within the Photos app. The first feature is Extend, which will allow you to “zoom out” on an existing photo, as the AI will generate intelligent details outside the original frame, known as generative fill.

The second feature is Enhance, which is not just a regular filter, but an AI engine that analyzes colors, lighting, and overall image quality to produce the best possible version of the photo and intelligently correct flaws. Finally, the Reframe feature, designed for Spatial Photos, will allow you to change the perspective of the photo to make it appear as if it were taken from a completely different angle, giving users unprecedented creative flexibility after the photo has been captured.
Not All Wishes Come True: Obstacles on the Road to Launch
Despite the great excitement, the road behind the scenes at Apple is not always paved with roses. Gurman points out that internal testing for these features is still suffering from instability, especially in the “Extend” and “Reframe” features, where results sometimes appear inconsistent or lack the required realism. Since Apple is well aware that its reputation is at stake if it releases features that do not work perfectly, some of these tools may be delayed until they are software-ready.

The primary goal of upcoming system updates like iOS 27 is not limited to creative features, but extends to intensive efforts to improve performance, battery life, and reduce software bugs. We are also waiting for the long-awaited, completely revamped version of Siri. These features are expected to debut during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote on June 8th, giving us a glimpse into the future of mobile photography.
