While all eyes are on the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June to see what Apple will bring in the upcoming iOS 27, it seems the company is not done refining the current system. Apple has released the release notes for the upcoming iOS 26.5 update, which will bring three new features aimed at improving the user experience in security, navigation, and aesthetic customization. The update is currently in its final stages and is expected to reach everyone next week.

RCS Encryption: A Big Step Toward Secure Messaging with Android
The highlight of this update is the activation of End-to-End Encryption for RCS messages between iPhones and Android devices. This feature is a long-awaited security upgrade, as messages between the two systems previously relied on the old, unencrypted SMS standard. Now, Apple ensures that messages sent via RCS between different systems will be protected and cannot be intercepted or read by any third party, including Apple itself.

Apple confirms that this security upgrade will depend on support from carriers around the world and will be expanded gradually. It is worth noting that iMessage conversations (the blue bubbles) have been fully encrypted since the days of iOS 5, but this step aims to protect user privacy even when communicating with friends outside the Apple ecosystem.
Apple Maps Gets Smarter (and Ads Are on the Way)
The second feature concerns the Apple Maps app, where a new section called “Suggested Places” has been added. This section will display personalized recommendations based on your current geographical location and what you frequently search for. The goal is to make discovering nearby restaurants or landmarks more seamless and aligned with your personal taste.

However, there is an important detail in this update; Apple announced that this section will begin displaying ads in the United States and Canada later this year. Although the word “ads” may bother some, Apple promises strong privacy protection, as the user’s location or interaction with ads will not be linked to their personal Apple account, and ads will carry a clear label distinguishing them from regular results.
“Luminance” Wallpaper: A New Aesthetic Touch
For fans of visual changes, the iOS 26.5 update adds a new wallpaper called “Pride Luminance.” This is not just a static image, but a dynamic wallpaper that refracts color spectrums and changes its appearance interactively on the iPhone and iPad screen. This wallpaper comes in celebration of LGBTQ+ communities around the world and coincides with the launch of a new sport band for the Apple Watch and a matching watch face.

With the “Release Candidate” version arriving for developers this week, it is almost certain that we will see the update available to the general public next week. It seems Apple is putting the finishing touches on iOS 26 to ensure its stability before the big hype journey begins with iOS 27.
