Recently, developers spotted very clear evidence in the fourth beta of iOS 27 indicating that Apple is preparing to launch an iPhone containing two internal batteries instead of the usual single one!
Code evidence for battery health
Macworld discovered new code strings related to “battery health” in the fourth beta of iOS 27. These strings clearly describe the presence of multiple batteries inside the iPhone, a phrasing style Apple has never used in any current iPhone models, which always rely on a single battery cell.
Among the discovered phrases are sentences such as: “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected,” and “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded.” Even more interesting is the presence of a warning that says: “Unable to verify that one of the batteries is a genuine Apple battery.”
Why does the iPhone need two batteries?
The simple and logical answer is: the foldable iPhone! It is widely expected that Apple will unveil its first foldable iPhone, which may be named “iPhone Ultra,” alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this coming September. Foldable phones with a book-style design typically split the battery capacity into two cells, with each placed on one side of the hinge to perfectly distribute weight and space within the slim chassis.
Previous reports and leaks suggest that Apple may use two batteries of different capacities; the first with 1921 mAh and the second with 2962 mAh, for a total of approximately 4883 mAh—an excellent capacity sufficient to efficiently power a large foldable screen throughout the day.
How will Apple handle multiple batteries?
These new code strings raise the possibility that Apple will track the status and health of each battery independently and verify the authenticity of each cell separately. However, it remains unclear whether authorized service providers will be able to replace just one faulty cell or if they will have to replace the entire system, as the text only refers to the possibility of replacing the “batteries” in the plural to restore lost performance and technical capacity.
Although some might think this plural phrasing refers to an external battery accessory (like battery cases), its appearance as a direct replacement for current individual battery text confirms that Apple is preparing new software support for a completely different internal battery mechanism suitable for future phones.
Folding indicators in iOS 27 and the future of the foldable iPhone
This is not the first time we have seen hints of foldable devices within iOS 27. Previous beta versions included clear references to folding states and hinge angle detection, and Apple is encouraging developers to prepare their apps to suit resizable and split-screen interfaces on multiple displays.
These developments coincide with reports that Apple has resolved most of the major issues related to the hinge, meaning the first foldable iPhone is rapidly approaching the actual mass production stage, ready for release in the very near future without any technical issues.
With all these successive hints in iOS 27, it seems the dream is becoming a near reality, and Apple is taking serious steps to change the foldable phone market in its own smart way, as it has always accustomed us to.
