An entire tech era comes to an end this week! The phone that revolutionized the smartphone world and ushered in the era of Face ID and edge-to-edge displays, the iPhone X, is now officially and completely out of Apple’s service.
What does Apple’s “Obsolete Product” classification mean?
Apple has officially added the iPhone X to its list of Obsolete Products, the final classification the company assigns to devices that have been discontinued for more than 7 years. This decision means that it is no longer possible to obtain any hardware technical support, official repairs, or spare parts for the phone from Apple or authorized service providers, even if the user is willing to pay the full costs.
The device had previously joined the “Vintage” products list two years ago, a classification where maintenance is provided on a limited basis depending on the availability of spare parts. Now, with its move to the obsolete list, the door to official technical support and maintenance for the phone is closed permanently.
A short life on the market and a legacy that changed the future
Although the iPhone X was the device that redrew the map of phone design by introducing the edge-to-edge OLED display and abandoning the traditional Home button in favor of a gesture-based system and Face ID, it was also one of the shortest-lived iPhones at retail.
Apple unveiled the iPhone X alongside the iPhone 8 in September 2017, and it went on sale in November of the same year. However, the company stopped selling it after just 313 days in September 2018, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone XS. On the software side, the phone’s support for major updates ended in 2023 with iOS 16, making it a retired phone both in terms of hardware and software today.
