Apple trains an AI model specifically for China in collaboration with Alibaba

Since the launch of Apple Intelligence, features have gradually expanded to reach many markets and languages. However, one of the largest iPhone markets in the world has remained absent from this technological shift: the Chinese market. Reaching billions of users in China is not merely a matter of translating text; it requires navigating a complex and strict regulatory wall imposed by authorities there on everything related to generative artificial intelligence.

The Chinese challenge and the obstacle of foreign models

Apple's challenges in the Chinese market

The core of the dilemma lies in the fact that Beijing imposes highly precise censorship and requires companies to ensure that Large Language Models (LLMs) operating within their devices are completely free of any foreign influence and subject to Chinese government standards and approvals. This clearly means that Apple cannot use its usual models developed in the United States, nor can it rely on external partner services like ChatGPT to support Siri within Chinese territory.

This reality left Apple with two options: either concede and use a ready-made Chinese model, as some other companies do, or innovate an engineering solution that maintains its identity and proprietary system. As expected from a company that cares about the finest details of the user experience, off-the-shelf solutions were not acceptable to the engineers in Cupertino, prompting them to seek a local partner to build a fully customized model.

Partnership with Alibaba to train a private and independent model

Recent reports indicate that Apple did not simply use a ready-made model from the Chinese tech giant Alibaba. Instead, it trained an entirely new Large Language Model dedicated to the Chinese market with the support and partnership of Alibaba. This move is similar to what Apple did globally when it relied on Google’s expertise and frameworks to develop its foundational models. However, in China, it is leveraging the architecture and expertise of Alibaba’s Qwen models to build a private model that bears Apple’s signature and adheres to local laws.

If things go according to plan after receiving regulatory approvals, Apple will be the first foreign company to receive a license to operate its own AI model within China. This is a major achievement that paves the way for launching Apple Intelligence and updated Siri features for millions of iPhone users in one of the company’s most important sales strongholds.

Do you think Apple will succeed in providing the same groundbreaking Apple Intelligence experience within China despite the strict regulatory restrictions?
