When Apple finally unveiled its long-awaited foldable phone, the “iPhone Duo,” it took everyone’s breath away with its innovative design, which offers two screens and a unique experience including exclusive features like Duo FaceTime and anticipated support for the Apple Pencil. Although it is the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made, achieving this engineering feat required making some painful hardware compromises. If you are planning to purchase it, thinking it combines all of Apple’s top-tier features, it is essential to realize that it lacks a full suite of advanced specifications and capabilities found in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Imaging System: Major Sacrifices for the Sake of Thinness
The most notable differences between the two phones are centered in the camera department, as Apple preferred to maintain the thinness of the iPhone Duo rather than equipping it with the heavy-duty hardware available in the Pro family. The compromises are as follows:
- Absence of a dedicated Telephoto lens: The iPhone Duo lacks the optical zoom camera that reaches 8x in the iPhone 18 Pro, settling instead for a 48MP Fusion main sensor that provides only 2x optical-quality zoom.
- Absence of Variable Aperture: The iPhone Duo does not possess the Variable Aperture feature available in the iPhone 18 Pro camera, which provides superior control over depth of field and optical isolation for photos and videos.
- Lower-resolution front camera: Apple equipped the Pro models with an 18MP front camera that supports Center Stage, while the iPhone Duo is limited to a 12MP front camera.
- Deprivation of professional imaging tools: The phone does not support Pro controls within the Camera app, and it lacks ProRAW shooting and the ProRes RAW format, in addition to not supporting the recording of Spatial Photos and Videos.
Missing Sensors: Goodbye to Face ID
The differences did not stop at the camera lenses; they extended to the daily usage style and the essential sensors we have been accustomed to in Apple’s flagship phones for years:
- Absence of Face ID: Instead of the advanced facial recognition system, Apple relied on a button equipped with Touch ID in the iPhone Duo to save internal space.
- Absence of the Action Button: The foldable phone does not include the dedicated, customizable Action Button found in the 18 Pro series.
- Absence of a LiDAR Scanner: The LiDAR scanner was completely dispensed with in the iPhone Duo, which affects augmented reality experiences and autofocus speed in low-light conditions.
Launch Schedule and Availability Dates
If you are weighing the two phones, you should know that the arrival dates for the markets will be different; pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max began on Saturday, September 12, at 5:00 AM Pacific Time, and the official launch was on Friday, September 18.
As for those wishing to purchase the foldable iPhone Duo, they must wait until Friday, October 16, for pre-orders to begin, before it becomes officially available in markets on Friday, October 23.
