The biggest advantage of considering this phone now is the availability of a massive amount of live, real-world tests that reveal the true battery performance, far from promotional estimates on paper.
Apple’s official estimates: A notable leap compared to previous generations
Apple typically relies on a video playback standard as a primary benchmark for measuring its battery capacity. Looking at its official figures, the iPhone 17 appears clearly superior to several previous and contemporary phones. The phone offers a massive leap compared to the previous generation iPhone 16 and even the iPhone 16 Pro, and it even outperforms the budget-friendly iPhone 17e and the thinner, more expensive iPhone Air.

In PhoneArena’s tests, the iPhone 16 outperformed by a small margin; the iPhone 17 lasted for 7 hours and 19 minutes in video streaming compared to 7 hours and 30 minutes for its predecessor. In the 3D gaming test, the iPhone 17 recorded 9 hours and 12 minutes, lagging about 40 minutes behind the iPhone 16, with the iPhone 17 ending with a final battery rating of 6 hours and 13 minutes against 6 hours and 21 minutes for the iPhone 16.
On the other hand, the processing power and power management in the iPhone 17 stand out when subjected to maximum pressure. In the extreme stress test by Notebookcheck, which relies on running PUBG in standby mode at the highest frame rate and ultra resolution with screen brightness set to maximum, the iPhone 17 continued to work for 4.4 hours, outperforming the iPhone 16 which stopped at 3.6 hours.
As for repeated offline video playback tests, the real-world results almost matched Apple’s promises; the phone recorded 29.4 hours in the Notebookcheck test for Full HD video playback in airplane mode, compared to 23.1 hours for the iPhone 16. The ExpertReviews platform also confirmed this superiority, recording 29.2 hours for the iPhone 17 via the VLC app compared to 25.8 hours for the iPhone 16, proving that the phone offers a real and tangible improvement in intensive usage and media playback.
