iPhone 18 Pro Leaks: Specifications, Design, and Key Anticipated Features

Only a few days remain until Apple’s highly anticipated “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9th, where all eyes are turning toward the next generation of flagship phones: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. While leaks suggest that the foldable phone might steal some of the spotlight this year, the Pro models remain the true backbone for high-performance users and annual upgrade enthusiasts. Another new development this year is that Apple may not unveil the base version of the iPhone 18 at the same time; reports indicate it has been delayed alongside the next generation of the iPhone Air until next spring, placing the Pro models firmly at the center of the stage.

Design and Colors: Manufacturing Improvements and a Distinctive Red Hue

Apple is not expected to perform a radical redesign of the chassis this year; the iPhone 18 Pro will retain the same design language as the iPhone 17 Pro, including the aluminum frame and the wide rear camera bump that extends across the top section. However, the Cupertino company has instead focused on refining the finer details and addressing some of the feedback from the previous generation.

The most notable of these improvements lies in the development of manufacturing processes to overcome the color discrepancy between the aluminum frame and the rear glass panel, making the device’s overall appearance more consistent and visually unified. Regarding colors, leaked models point to the addition of a crimson or dark burgundy red, which adds a clear sense of luxury to the series, with the almost certain absence of the classic black in favor of dark gray, silver, and light blue shades.

The Dynamic Island Finally Shrinks

The Dynamic Island on the iPhone screen

Since the launch of the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro, there has been no real change in its size or shape. It seems Apple is finally ready to take a step forward by moving some Face ID components to sit directly under the OLED screen without affecting response speed or the usual security levels.

This engineering change will allow for a reduction in the size of the Dynamic Island on the screen, giving the user additional display space at the top. Although we have not yet reached the point of completely hiding the Face ID sensors under the display, shrinking the cutout area gives the Pro models a tangible visual distinction this year.

Thicker Chassis for a Larger Battery

The pursuit of thinness at the expense of battery capacity has long been a trade-off that most users do not prefer, and it seems Apple is well aware of this in this cycle. Reports indicate a slight increase in the thickness of the iPhone 18 Pro models, which will directly affect weight; the iPhone 18 Pro Max may reach approximately 240 grams, compared to 233 grams for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The real gain from this increase is providing space for a larger battery; rumors suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will be equipped with a 4,288 mAh battery, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will receive a huge jump to a 5,567 mAh battery compared to 5,088 mAh in the previous generation, promising exceptional battery life for heavy tasks.

A20 Pro Processor with 2nm Manufacturing: A Real Leap in Efficiency

The most prominent internal hardware upgrade will be the A20 Pro processor, which represents the first Apple phone chip manufactured using 2nm technology via TSMC foundries, surpassing the 3nm process used in the previous A19 Pro chip.

This ultra-fine precision allows for stacking a larger number of transistors in a smaller space, offering an improvement in overall performance of between 15% and 18%, and an impressive jump in energy efficiency of up to 30% under certain conditions. With this processor’s synergy with the operating system, this phone will be the fastest and most energy-efficient in the series’ history.

Variable Aperture and Price Expectations

The camera is always the primary attraction in the Pro category, and this year may see the introduction of a mechanically variable aperture after years of rumors. Current phone cameras use a fixed aperture, while an adjustable aperture allows for control over the amount of light reaching the sensor and natural control over depth of field (bokeh), giving professional photographers exceptional flexibility in various lighting conditions.

Conversely, expectations suggest a potential price increase for iPhone 18 Pro phones by approximately $100, with the Pro version in the United States starting at around $1,199, due to rising costs of storage memory and advanced components. This increase may be inevitable after years of price stability for certain tiers.

Do you think the 2nm processor upgrade and support for a variable aperture are enough to convince you to switch to the iPhone 18 Pro?
