If you have felt bored with the childish cartoonish images produced by the Image Playground app since its launch, Apple has good news for you in the iOS 27 update. Although the smart assistant Siri stole the spotlight at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company revealed stunning upgrades to its Apple Intelligence system, and it seems the famous image generation app has finally matured into a professional tool capable of competing with the big players.

Goodbye Pixar-style, Hello Stunning Realism

During the conference, Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s Director of Input Experience, explained that the image generation app has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. The new systems, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, will feature an entirely new version of Image Playground, powered by more robust image generation models to deliver superior quality and any style the user prefers.
This includes, for the first time in the history of Apple Intelligence, the production of photorealistic images. When the app first appeared two years ago in iOS 18.2, it was limited to cartoonish images resembling Pixar studio animations. Some styles were added in later updates, such as the Sketch style in iOS 18.4 and ChatGPT-powered styles in iOS 26, but they did not meet expectations. Now, with iOS 27, you will be able to transform your existing photos into anything you can imagine using simple voice or text prompts in natural language.
Smart Editing Tools and Precise Selection at Your Fingertips

The new version of Image Playground is not limited to generating images from scratch; it also introduces highly intelligent and precise editing features. You will now be able to select a specific part of an image with a touch and apply an edit command only to that area, preventing any unwanted changes to the rest of the image. You can also choose whether you want to add a new element, modify an existing one, or remove it entirely, with the ability to drag the corners of the selection box to resize it manually, saving you the trouble of crafting complex text prompts.
Additionally, the app will provide an easy pop-up menu that allows you to choose image dimensions and aspect ratios and change them instantly. The app will also offer automatic suggestions based on the content you are working on, and developers will be able to integrate this powerful generative model directly into their own apps via the Image Playground API.
Apple’s Pride: Privacy First and Curbing Fakes
Although Apple is a bit late in this field compared to Google and ChatGPT developers who have been offering realistic images for years, it enters the competition backed by its greatest competitive advantage: your absolute privacy. Everything you do within the app remains confidential and private to you.

Of course, this does not mean that heavy photorealistic image processing will be done entirely on your iPhone, as this requires processing capabilities that exceed mobile devices. Instead, requests will be sent to a powerful generation model running on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC). With Apple recently changing its cloud strategy and adopting Nvidia’s confidential computing platform to protect and fully encrypt data at the hardware level, Apple remains committed to full transparency by opening the system for inspection by experts and independent reviewers.
And because photorealistic images increase the risk of deepfakes, Apple has taken a smart step to ensure security and credibility by adding a hidden digital watermark using SynthID technology to clarify that these images were generated via artificial intelligence.
